Exposure to asbestos at the workplace is the single most important risk factor for developing mesothelioma. In the era when safety measures were often deficient, workers were constantly exposed to asbestos fibers and many of them developed the disease. Mesothelioma develops some 40-60 years after exposure and is thus common in the senior citizens who have worked in places known to have asbestos in the ambient environment. Compensations and lawsuits are common and are justified where there were gross violations in safety measures. The manufacturers and even distributors knew for decades that asbestos was hazardous, but they did not warn people of those hazards. As a result, a patient has the right of recovery against those manufacturers who can help pay the costs of treatment and provide compensation for the resultant pain and suffering.
No amount of monetary benefits can compensate the suffering but at least the compensation can take care of the medical expenses involved. Any person affected directly or indirectly is eligible for compensation.
Filing a mesothelioma lawsuit is a long and tedious process. As soon as a diagnosis has been made, it is critical to get hold of a qualified mesothelioma attorney to file claims. It is better to file a suit with the help of attorneys who are experienced in these issues. They have done the hard legwork and groundwork and as such can help speedier processing of the claims. All said and done choosing a mesothelioma attorney is a personal decision and best left to the patient and his or her relatives.
The following questions can help make a good decision regarding mesothelioma lawyers and firms.
1. How long has the firm been handling these type of cases? 2. How many cases are being handled currently? 3. How many cases have been handles successfully in the recent past? 4. Will a law firm work on your case or refer it to another law firm? If referred what are the credentials of the referred law firm? 5. How many cases have been taken to trial and what have been the nature of the verdicts? 6. In the event of an appeal are there qualified lawyers in the firm who handle appellate and related legal issues? 7. What is the track record for the firm in handling appealed cases successfully?
The Martindale-Hubbell Legal network is a good point to begin search for mesothelioma lawyers and firms. A simple search on a search engine will give further details. The Oklahoma Bar Association has put out excellent guidelines regarding choosing an attorney. They state that "Selecting a lawyer is a personal matter. You must judge which particular attorney will be best for you. Before making a decision, however, you may want to contact several lawyers or law firms to gather some comparative information."
It is extremely important to trust the lawyer or firm one hires. No lawyer can be expected to win every case, and sometimes the best legal advice may not be exactly what you want to hear."

Mesothelioma is a Deadly Cancer

Mesothelioma is considered to be the most deadly type of cancer that cannot be cured easily and the person who suffers from Mesothelioma do not survive for a long time as the lining of the internal organs like the heart, the lungs and the stomach is affected. This cancer is mainly caused by the exposure to asbestos or materials that contain asbestos. This cancer cannot be detected at an early stage as the symptoms of the disease can be seen only in the developed or the last stage. It is a malignant cancer that is the result of inhaling particles of damaged asbestos in the air which start damaging the lining of the internal organs.
Symptoms of Mesothelioma
The symptoms of Mesothelioma can be detected after 20 to 50 years of exposure. If the lining of the heart or the lungs is damaged then the most common problem that develops is breathing problem. This is due to the accumulation of fluid in the chest, which is known as Pleural Mesothelioma. The symptoms are totally different if the stomach lining is affected. The patient often complains of stomach ache, loses his appetite and other problems develop like problem in the bowel, frequent fever, anemia and other problems. Most of the people take these symptoms lightly and by the time they go to the doctor it is too late. After the disease is detected in most patients survive between 6 to 12 months.
Treatment for Mesothelioma
An effective treatment of this disease depends on several factors like, in which stage the cancer has been detected, what is the age of the patient, how much the cancerous cells have circulated and the general health condition of the patient, that is whether he is suffering from some other disease or not. It has been observed that chemotherapy is the only treatment available for these patients. It uses medicines, chemicals or drugs in a systematic manner to eradicate the cancerous cells. The medicine is either injected directly in the body or administered in pill forms.
In few cases the medicine is directly injected in chest. This is called intrapleural chemotherapy. If the lining of the stomach is affected then the medicine is inserted into the abdomen which is called intra peritoneal chemotherapy. The direct insertion is done to retard the formation of the cancerous cells. Patients are advised before the surgery and after the surgery to minimize the development of the cancerous cell.
The patient has to bear the pain of chemotherapy treatment to be cured and gain longevity or has to meet his end within 6-12 months. Now it is in the hands of the patient whether he will go for chemotherapy and have full faith of recovery.

Lung Cancer Through the Quad Transfer

Lung cancer, not only in the primary site continue to grow and spread, but also often through the lymphatic and Xuelu transferred to the local lymph nodes and other body organs. The incidence of lung cancer more often concealed, early often no obvious symptoms, easily overlooked, and even some long-distance transfer of patients has occurred, is still not confirmed, the understanding of the characteristics of the transfer of lung cancer, lung cancer diagnosis and treatment will also be Helpful.
Direct spread
Lung cancer from bronchial occurred along the infiltration of bronchial wall, directly to the proliferation of proximal or distal end, to be invaded trachea eminence plane, or air to the lungs through bronchial wall infiltration growth in real terms, and further up to mediastinal pleura . The latter can lead to the cultivation of the two pleural proliferation, pleural thickening, as if the corpus callosum. Could be worse transgression and chest wall and diaphragmatic, or to the esophagus and the pericardium.
Lymphatic metastasis
Lung cancer at an early stage is likely to occur lymphatic metastasis. General small cell carcinoma of the transfer earlier than squamous cell carcinoma and. First found in lymphatic metastasis of the lung lymph nodes, hilar lymph nodes, trachea and bronchi adjacent lymph nodes. This may be to mediastinal lymph nodes (which is the guideline for long-distance transfer) autopsy cases of lung cancer about half that peritoneal metastasis.
Xuelu transfer
Xuelu transfer of common lung cancer, often caused systemic result of extensive transfer of death, the mortality rate was 92%. Especially those that are not differentiated small cell lung cancer such as cancer, the cancer cells may occur early Xuelu transfer, and then later adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Lung cancer transferred to remote organs, not from lung cancer is often the primary site Xuelu transfer, but through the mediastinum into the metastasis venous circulation Yan returned to the lungs. Therefore, in general there is no transfer of early lung cancer, lung metastasis is not uncommon. According to the autopsy materials and lung cancer of the lung metastases found only 10 percent of the cases, but to make sure it is transferred from the Xuelu mediastinal lymph nodes from, or from the more common internal organs to shift from the Xuelu, it is difficult.
Cultivation of transfer
Body cavity of the organ tumors spread to the organ surface, the tumor cells can be exfoliated and, like sowing, planting in the body cavity and body cavity of the organ on the surface, forming the majority of the transfer. This method known as the transfer of duty of the transfer or sowing, more than occurred in the abdominal or thoracic organ cancer. Organs of cancer, such as the invasion of gastric cancer and gastric damage serosa, Ke Zhongzhi to the omentum, peritoneal, abdominal organs in the face of even the surface of ovarian, etc.. Lung cancer is often in the chest with a wide range of cultivation of the transfer. Serous cavity of the cultivation of each shift with serous bloody fluid, it is because subserosal lymphatic or vascular thrombosis was resistance, resistance to cancer or serous stimulus to the permeability of capillary A result of increased leakage increased, and because blood vessels were small cell carcinoma of the destruction it caused bleeding. Suction fluid for cytology see often available on the cancer cells. It is worth noting that surgery could also result in cultivation.

Top 5 Signs of Lung Cancer to Long-Term Smokers

Usually in the early of lung cancer, there are no special symptoms. Only when lung cancer is developed to a certain stage, there will be some symptoms, including cough, blood in sputum, fever, chest pain, chest tightness and some other respiratory symptoms. Lung cancer may easily be overlooked or be treated as pneumonia, so to cause the delay condition. People above 40 years old especially have a long history of smoking or passive smoking, must have a regular physical examination annually. People should also be vigilant immediately for medical treatment when the following performance appears, which is helpful to find lung cancer in time.
1. Chronic Cough
Tumour stimulates the trachea, will often lead to irritating cough. This cough has nothing to do with the season, time or medication. This is the most common symptoms of lung cancer, and about 2/3 of the patients have this symptom. People must be prudent when there is a cough of unknown causes. Some people who has a long-term chronic cough must go to see a doctor when he feels that the cough situation has changed.
2. Blood In Sputum
Tumour causes cell necrosis and broken of capillaries, a small amount of bleeding mixed with sputum and so this Intermittent or persistent symptom appears. About 50% of the patients with lung cancer have this symptom.
3. Chest Pain
About 30%-40% of lung cancer patients will appear chest pain, generally not keen intermittent chest pain, mainly shown as stuffy pain or vague pain with uncertain location, may continue from several minutes to several hours.
4. Repeated Fever
Bronchial cavity was blocked by tumor, poor drainage may lead to fever. The body temperature is generally under 38 degrees. Treat early with antibiotic, the body temperature can return to normal, but easy to relapse.
5. Chest Tightness And Shortness Of Breath
Tumor will affect the normal lung function, and will lead to chest tightness and shortness of breath when people are tired, which is the most obvious in central lung cancer.

Asbestos in Children's Toys

Asbestos in toys. Asbestos in duct tape, in spackle, and sealer. In December 2007 asbestos was found in the childrens toy, "The CSI Fingerprint Examination Kit" as well as two brands of children's play clay. Where else can asbestos be found? Vinyl flooring, duct wrapping on heating and air conditioning systems, roof shingles and home siding, ceilings (where it has the textured, bumpy look). EEEK, I grew up with that. Wall and attic insulation and sheet rock compound to name a few.
O.K., some of the products mentioned were produced between 1920 and 1970. However, the shocking truth is that asbestos is still being used in consumer products today, in 2008! Do you do gardening? If so, NEVER use a product with vermiculite in it. Vermiculite is a mineral that is usually contaminated with asbestos. Vermiculite has been used in potting mixes, brake pads, acoustic tiles, and insulation.
What about collecting antiques? Coffee pots, irons, toaster and blow dryers have contained asbestos. One blow dryer called the " Rocket Blower" was used in beauty salons until it was recalled in 1979.
Talc, yes the stuff in baby powder and cosmetics could contain asbestos. On June 22, 2000 in the Seattle Post Intelligencer, Andrew Schneider's article ran about the asbestos contamination in Talc.
How do we know that our baby powder, ceilings and toasters do not contain asbestos? We don't. Many homes built before 1980 contain asbestos. It can be in the vinyl floor tiles, ceiling tiles, roof shingles, insulation, pipe cement, and joint compound. Some newer houses may also contain asbestos.
Asbestos can be found in many public places. Two of our recent national tragedies come to mind...9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. When the World Trade Center collapsed, it sent a large amount of asbestos dust into the air. The first responders and citizens breathed in that dust. Many folks have developed lung problems, and some have already died. Hurricane Katrina clean up efforts had to be halted due to the presence of asbestos.
Why is existence of asbestos such a big deal? It is a big deal because thousands and thousands of people have died from asbestos exposure. Asbestos fiber's are breathed in when mixed with dust. The fiber are like little razors. They can cause significant scarring of the lung tissue leading to a disease called asbestosis. Breathing asbestos fiber's can also lead to a form of lung cancer called mesothelioma. The ONLY known cause of mesothelioma and asbestosis is breathing in asbestos particles. Scientists have stated that NO amount of asbestos exposure is safe.
So why? Why do products still contain asbestos? Why isn't there more information available for the public to learn about the danger of asbestos? If you are outraged by this, you may click on the link to my site, and sign the online petition to completely eliminate asbestos in all products.

What You Need to Know About Lung Cancer

Lung cancer occurs when cancerous cells develop in the lung's tissue. It is the most common fatal cancer among men and women, and it is the number one killer in the world. Lung cancer has the highest mortality rate out of all the cancers combined. People with risk factors for developing the disease should have regular checkups to determine if they are cancer free.
Family history of the disease can be a warning sign that lung cancer may run in your family and that you should be checked more often. Some risk factors for lung cancer can also include age, sex, or race and are called non-modifiable factors because the person can't change them. Some lesser-known symptoms to watch out for include:
• Shoulder or upper back pain caused by a tumor pressing into the lung lining
• Swelling of the face and neck caused by change in circulation brought on by the tumor
• Having frequent bouts of pneumonia or other lung infections
When tumors press against blood vessels, the fluids cannot travel as well through the body, and these fluids build up in the neck and face and often times the hands and feet as well. Having frequent periods of lung infections or pneumonia can also be a sign of lung cancer as the cells of the tumor trap and hold bacteria.
There are two types of lung cancer - Non-small cell and small cell. Non-small cell cancer is usually associated with people who smoke and is the most common form of diagnosed cancer. Small cell lung cancer - or oat cancer - is rarer, but is also caused by smoking. Non-small cancer is more common and spreads much slower than small cell cancer. Three main types of this cancer are named for the cells where they tend to develop. These are Squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and large cell carcinoma. Small cell lung cancer tends to grow and spread much more quickly than non-small cancer and can quickly spread to other areas of the body. Both types of cancers react to treatments in different ways.
Some substances that can cause lung cancer are familiar to you while others may come as a surprise. Cigarette smoking is one of the causes. How often have you heard that over the years? It is far more likely that someone who smokes will develop lung cancer than someone who doesn't smoke. The age at which the person began smoking, and the length of time they've been smoking are also factors in the development of the disease. Even people who don't smoke themselves can be exposed to the second-hand smoke and develop lung cancer over time. Some other substances that can cause lung cancer include Radon exposure and Asbestos exposure.
It's very important to follow up with your doctor if you suspect that you may have some symptoms. The sooner the disease is discovered and treatment is begun, the sooner you'll be well again. Regular checkups can make sure that any cancer is caught in the early stages and can be treated quickly and effectively with a variety of treatments. Physical exams, x-rays, and blood or urine tests may be required to check thoroughly.

Lung Diseases Up Among 9-11 Rescue Workers

People living and working in New York on that fateful day when the Twin Towers came down are becoming ill in growing numbers. World Trade first responders and others are developing chronic coughs, lung diseases and now other cancers caused by breathing the toxic mix of asbestos, dioxine, benezine, and other carcinogens released at and around the site.
Eventually some are likely to develop mesothelioma-a disease specifically related to exposure to asbestos. And some who were there will also begin to develop potentially lethal blood clots. Patients with cancer of all types tend to have a significantly higher risk of blood clotting then the general population. Because of its severity as a disease, scientists decided to try to find out whether patients with mesothelioma also follow that trend.
In a small study in the state of New Mexico the rate of dangerous (thromboembolism) among mesothelioma patients was significantly higher-close to double the rate-among other cancer patients. This is yet another way this disease can kill or disable its victims. If you know someone who may be at risk for mesothelioma, be sure to let them know they should talk to their doctor about the advisability of taking blood thinners (anticoagulants).
There are similarities between the victims of the Towers tragedy and those who've developed mesothelioma as a result of manufacturers who failed to provide adequate warnings and protective clothing and equipment for people working around asbestos. The difference is there will be a far larger public outcry when the consequences to rescue workers at the 9/11 disaster become common knowledge. When you've been the victim of such failures in the private sector, you have to look harder to find a voice on your behalf.
Be sure to find a doctor who understands the need to keep an open mind about diagnosing and treating mesothelioma. And if you've been diagnosed, please don't hesitate to call if you have any questions about your right to file a lawsuit for compensation or other damages for being exposed to asbestos at work. Mesothelioma is a killer disease and you and your family deserve to understand your legal rights.

Kent Cigarettes Filters Used Deadly Crocidolite Asbestos

Incredible as it may seem - because the dangers of asbestos were already beginning to be known - back in the 50s the P. Lorillard Company was using deadly crocidolite fibers in its Kent cigarette filters. In a review guide on eBay, an asbestos-identifying private consultant writes about the history of the asbestos-laden "micronite" filter used on Kent cigarettes between 1952 and 1956. And the U.S. government website notes that anyone who smoked a pack a day of Kent cigarettes between 1952 and 1956 may have been exposed to as much as 131 million crocidolite structures in a single year.
If you know anyone who was a smoker during this period, you may want to advise them of the danger to which they may have been exposed. Suggest they consult a physician who is an expert at understanding the early signs of asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma. Early detection can help with treatment and possibly improve quality of life. See below to find information about doctors who understand the complexities of diagnosing and treating mesothelioma.
Perhaps even more interesting was the claim that Kent cigarettes made for the positive health benefits the filter supposedly conferred on smokers. When a large number of workers from the Kent factories making the filters began coming down with those respiratory diseases, the alarm was raised. In 1995 scientists located unopened packages of Kent filter cigarettes date stamped from 1952. They put them through testing with artificial smoking machines that could measure the contents of the smoke. Extensive testing with first puffs and puffs after cigarettes had been put out and relit revealed that crocidolite fibers were present in the filters. They showed that many of the fibers were long enough to be classed as more likely to be carcinogenic and that substantial numbers of those longer fibers were carried directly into the smokers' mouth and lungs.
As time has passed and more and more people are growing sick 30, 40, and 50 years later because of negligent behaviors by corporate entities long ago, our society has begun to realize that advertising can be manipulated to say anything that serves to boost sales, regardless of whether it's based on facts. This is a good thing for public health--though too late for many. We are dedicated to helping assist those who may be suffering from mesothelioma from any cause.
If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma or feel you've been exposed to asbestos or other toxic substances on the job, first find the right medical help. Older homes were made of asbestos.
Even though it's hard to detect in its early stages, a doctor can perform a couple of tests. Chest x-ray, CT scan and MRI scan will allow the doctor to do a good diagnose.
A CT scan is used to create detailed images. MRI scan uses magnetism, radio waves, and a computer but does not utilize radiation to create a clear image.
These tests aid the doctor in differentiating between mesothelioma and other lung tumors. And they can also help in determining where the tumor is.
If necessary, a doctor might have to draw fluid to confirm its diagnosis. There are a couple of ways to do it.
First, a doctor can make a small incision to place a flexible tube in the area of the tumor which is called a thoracoscopy. Sometimes, however, a more extensive surgical procedure may be advisable.
Second, a thoracotomy can be done to open the chest to take a tissue sample and to remove most of the visible tumor. Also, a mediastinoscopy may be done to determine what kind of cancer it is.
Then, the tissue samples are looked at under a microscope to determine whether the tumor is a mesothelioma or some other type of cancer.

Mesothelioma - Diagnosis of Mesothelioma Cancer

If you have researched a little, you should know that diagnosis of Mesothelioma cancer is very difficult in many cases, because its symptoms can be associated with other diseases too. Hence patient's medical history is quite important to know, since if there was an exposure to asbestos from the sick person, the risk factors for developing Mesothelioma are greater.
The doctor will order you a physical examination, including chest and abdomen x-rays, and lung function tests. A computerized tomography (CT) or a computerized axial tomography (CAT) scan may be useful, along with a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
The CT scan allows a computer x-rays machine to create a series of detailed pictures of inner body areas. The MRI allows to obtain detailed images of areas inside the body through a powerful magnet linked to a computer.
The way to confirm a Mesothelioma diagnosis is a biopsy, in which an oncologist or a doctor specialized in diagnosing and treating cancer pathologies takes a sample of tissue from the patient to examine it under a microscope. The biopsy may be performed in various ways. In a thoracoscopy the name of the biopsy if the cancer is in the chest the doctor makes a small cut through the patient's chest and introduce a tube called thoracoscope to look inside and take tissue samples.
In a peritoneoscopy if the cancer is in the abdomen the doctor makes the same procedure but in the patient's abdominal cavity to obtain tissue for examination.
The stage of the disease is important to know if cancer is metastasized to other parts of the body, and to apply the best treatment for the patient.
The disease will be 'localized' if the cancer is found only on the surface of the membrane, but it will be 'advanced' if it has spread to other parts of the body, such as lungs, abdominal organs, chest wall, lymph nodes.

Mesothelioma - Treatments For Mesothelioma Cancer

Mesothelioma cancer is currently treated through three treatments, depending on the cancer location, the disease stage, and the patient's general health and age. These treatments are surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, which sometimes are combined to fight the disease in so far as possible.
In a surgery, one of the most common treatments for mesothelioma, the doctor removes part of the lining of the abdomen or the chest and some tissue around it. In a pneumonectomy, the doctor may also remove one lung when the patient has pleural mesothelioma or cancer of the pleura. In other surgical procedure, the doctor may also remove part of the diaphragm, the muscle below the lungs that helps with breathing. Through these procedures, the medical specialist shall try to excise tumourous tissue arising from this cancer disease. As these operations will reduce the patient's respiratory capacity, the surgeon will evaluate the patient's ability to function after a lung tissue removal, before performing a pneumonectomy.
Another method to fight Mesothelioma is chemotherapy or the use of anticancer drugs to kill cancer cells throughout the body. These drugs are given to the patient by an intravenous procedure, an injection into a vein. Currently, experts are studying the effectiveness of intracavitary chemotherapy or the possibility of giving chemotherapy straight to the chest or abdomen.
Radiotherapy or radiation therapy is the use of high-energy rays to destroy malignant cells and shrink tumors. It is important to know that this medical procedure attacks the cancer cells only in the treated area. There are two ways of giving this therapy. One, external radiation, in which the radiation comes from a machine, and other, internal radiation, where the cancer cells are found after putting materials that produce radiation into the affected area.
Doctor's way to relieve patient's pain is to use a needle or a thin tube to drain fluid that has built up in the abdominal or chest cavities through a procedure called thoracentesis. When it is from the chest, and paracentesis, when the removal is from the abdomen. The specialists may also give the drugs through a tube in the chest to prevent the accumulation of more liquid.

Asbestosis is an Asbestos Related Disease and May Be Considered As an Occupational Disease Too

A benign pleural disease is an asbestos-related disease which still has something of mystery to experts, since they don't know why some asbestos workers get one of several benign diseases of the pleura while others are not affected by the terrible consequences of Asbestos.
The pleural cavity is the space between the lungs and the chest wall, which has an small amount of pleural fluid in the normal non-diseased state. The pleura is the epithelium that lines this cavity. Asbestos fibers can reach this part of the body.
The parietal pleura, which is connected to the chest wall, is highly sensitive to pain. Meanwhile, the visceral pleura, which is connected to the lung and other visceral tissues, is not sensitive to pain.
The function of pleura and pleural fluid is to reduce friction between the lungs and the inside of the chest wall during breathing. Asbestos fibers make difficult this. A benign pleural condition usually does not progress and is not fatal. These conditions include pleural plaques, diffuse pleural fibrosis and benign pleural effusion.
Pleural effusion occurs when fluid accumulates in the pleural space and compresses the lungs.
Pleural plaques is a discrete fibrous or partially calcified thickened area which can be seen on x-rays of individuals exposed to asbestos. Benign pleural diseases appear various years after the exposure to asbestos and according to some experts cause little or no trouble, since some people do not even show symptoms. The answer is definitely yes.
Asbestos-related diseases are increasing in the United States and in some other countries, and this is because asbestos workers were exposed to this mineral, which is the main risk factor for developing the disease. The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) helps you to find out if you are entitled to compensation if you worked and were exposed to asbestos.
This is important, because when you are sick you do not have time to think of your disease causes, since you never thought of being ill with pain and even with so much danger to your health.
In Ontario, Canada, exists a Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) that oversees your state's workplace safety education and training system, provides disability benefits, monitors the quality of health care, and assists in early and safe return to work.
The most exposed workers to the risk of developing an asbestos-related disease are power plant workers, asbestos and talc miners, shipyard workers, auto break mechanics, demolition workers, pipe fitters, insulation workers, boilermakers and workers who make products which contain asbestos, such as firebricks, fire-retardant paint and asbestos cement.
The most common asbestos-related diseases are asbestosis, mesothelioma, benign pleural diseases, pleural plaques and lung cancer.
A cure does not exist for most of the above mentioned diseases, but there are treatments such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy, as for other types of cancer pathologies. There are also different ways of prevention the high risk of inhaling asbestos fibers when you work with this material.

Mesothelioma - Symptoms of Mesothelioma Cancer

Do you know what the most common symptoms of mesothelioma cancer are? Well, the most common symptoms are shortness of breath and pain in the chest. These symptoms occur due to a buildup of fluid in the pleura, what is known as Pleural Mesothelioma. However there are other symptoms of Peritoneal Mesothelioma, those may include weight loss, abdominal pain and swelling, this is due to an accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity.
Peritoneal mesothelioma may include other uncomfortable symptoms too, such as bowel obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities, anemia and fever. However these symptoms can appear before if malignant cancerous cells have spread beyond the mesothelium to other parts of the body, and other symptoms such as trouble swallowing, pain, and swelling of the neck or face may appear.
Mesothelioma or other less serious conditions may caused these symptoms, therefore the importance of going to a doctor if you feel any of these symptoms, because only an expert like him can make a correct diagnosis.
Mesothelioma cancer rate has increased over the past 20 years and although this disease is not as common as other cancer pathologies, the number of new diagnosed cases in the United States has risen up to 2,000 per year.
According to experts the major risk factor for developing Mesothelioma lies in working with asbestos, so if you are a asbestos worker remember following the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommendations in order to reduce your risk.

Mesothelioma - What Mesothelioma Cancer Is

If you need information about malignant mesothelioma cancer, you might find it difficult to get the right information written in a simple way. Everybody has listened the word mesothelioma at least once, but very few people know what this rare type of cancer really is. Through of a series of articles about this subject, you will know and learn rapidly about this cancer disease that affects either, men or women at any age without any kind of distinction. Lets review some basic concepts and what this disease exactly is.
The cancer of the mesothelium appears when the cells of the membrane that forms the lining of several internal organs within the different body cavities, the pleura in the thoracal cavity, the peritoneum in the abdominal cavity and the pericardium in the heart sac, become abnormal or 'malignant' and divide neither with control nor order.
The mesothelium is composed by two layers of cells, which produce a fluid that enable the expanding and contracting movements of organs, such as the heart beating and the corresponding lungs movements.
Although most Mesothelioma cases start in the pleura or peritoneum, the problem increases when these cancerous cells can damage nearby tissues and organs or even metastasize or spread to other parts of your body.
Despite that the Mesothelioma cancer rate has increased over the past 20 years, this disease is not as common as other types of cancer pathology. The number of new diagnosed cases in the United States rises up to 2,000 per year.

Asbestosis Truth

Asbestosis is an asbetos-related disease and may be considered as an occupational disease too, since most of the cases occur among people who worked with asbestos or their families. However there are cases of people who developed it, without having been in contact with this mineral at any period of time on their lives.
Asbestosis may be defined as a chronic inflammatory medical condition that affects the parenchymal tissue of the lungs. Experts consider asbestosis as an irreversible lung scarring that can be fatal. It occurs after a long-term and a heavy exposure to asbestos.
Asbestos are six fibrous minerals that have been used in commercial products, such as roofing products, gaskets, and friction products, due to various properties that make asbestos have high tensile strength, chemical and thermal stability, high flexibility and low electrical conductivity.
These six types of asbestos are chrysotile, crocidolite, amosite, anthophyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos. Nearly all of the asbestos produced worldwide is chrysotile.
When the person has inhaled or swallowed asbestos fibers, his body will try to remove them by the cough but the lungs will scar and get thick, what makes hard for lungs the breathing movements of expansion and contraction. Therefore, people with Asbestosis suffer severe dyspnea or shortness of breath and have an increased risk for developing different types of lung cancer and mesothelioma. There is no cure for this pathology and either a good way to treat it. The only thing that physician can do is to reduce some of the worst symptoms of the disease.

Three Symptoms to Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is the biggest side effect of smoking cigarettes. Since it's deadly it's important to recognize all the early signs and symptoms of lung cancer.
The first symptom is constant coughing. The lining of the air passages contain sensitive nerves. There purpose is to protect the airways from any foreign substance like dirt, dust, blood or a tumor. By stimulating the cough reflex, these nerves help the body get rid of particles, therefore keeping the airways clean. If a tumor develops near the airways passages, coughing will be the primary symptom. Coughing is usually the primarily symptom in 20-80 percent of cancer cases.
The second symptom is wheezing. This is the sound that is produced as air tries to pass through an airway that is partially blocked. Tumors usually produce localized wheezing that's heard on the side of the chest where the tumor is located.
The third symptom is coughing up blood. This is by far the most severe of the three. If the surface of the tumor bleeds, you will cough up blood-tinged mucous. This final symptom should be taken very seriously. You need to see a doctor as soon as possible if this ever happens to you.
After you have been diagnosed with having lung cancer, the next concern is how quickly it my spread. This called the doubling speed and is important in determining which stage you're in. This will determine how much time you have to receive treatment. This is especially important in small cell lung cancer, since it tends to spread more rapidly. If you're experiencing any of these symptoms visit your doctor right away. He'll be able to give you all the information on the best treatment options to fit your individual needs.

What Are the Risks of Asbestos Exposure?

Mining and commercial use of asbestos began in the 1800s, and grew significantly during World War II. Its popularity came to an abrupt halt in the 1970s however, when the United States Consumer Product and Safety Commission passed the first laws banning its use in certain products, because the asbestos fibers were being released into the environment.
In the 1980s, the Environmental Protection Agency added to those laws by banning any new uses for it, although laws still allowed for the use of it in any way that existed prior to that time. Despite the attention given to asbestos exposure, beginning with those laws, there are still many people who are unaware of what it is or what harm it presents to those who are exposed to it.
It is a mineral that occurs naturally in fiber bundles, and the bundles can be separated into individual fibers. Asbestos fibers are resistant to heat, fire and chemicals, and they do not conduct electricity. With those characteristics, products containing asbestos were a perfect fit for many construction and manufacturing industries.
Asbestos products include brake shoes and clutch pads for automobiles, insulation for boilers and steam pipes on ships, and strengthening agents for cement and talc-based crayons. In the construction industry, asbestos fibers are used in ceiling tiles, paint that is lead based, plastics, adhesives, soundproofing material and insulation. As long as the fibers are encased and contained, with little chance of exposure under normal conditions, all of these uses are legal.
Unfortunately, asbestos exposure can carry significant health risks, some of which are untreatable and incurable at the present time. One of the most common diseases resulting from exposure to it is asbestosis, sometimes called asbestos lung, which is a chronic inflammation of the lungs that leads to shortness of breath, coughing, and even permanent lung damage.
Another source of asbestos litigation is for mesothelioma, which is a cancer that develops in the protective lining of the body's major organs. The two most common forms are pleural mesothelioma, which affects the lining around the lungs, and pericardial mesothelioma, which affects the lining around the heart.
Despite centuries of asbestos mining and usage, asbestos exposure has only recently been recognized as a health hazard. Because symptoms of exposure can take 10 to 50 years to show up, it took medical professionals a great deal of time to connect the disease to it.
As asbestos litigation becomes more common, the use of this substance has, in most applications, declined. Asbestos fibers are still legal, despite the hazards of exposure, only if manufacturers follow all legally required safety standards.

The Three Variations of Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a devastating form of cancer caused by long term exposure to asbestos. While workers of various industries are at the greatest risk of developing the disease due to the time they spend near asbestos filled products and buildings, the disease can affect anyone at anytime in their life.
Mesothelioma develops in the membrane, known as the mesothelium, that covers most of the body's vital organs. There are three different forms of the cancer, named for the various organs that they directly affect:
- Pleural mesothelioma - Pericardial mesothelioma - Peritoneal mesothelioma.
Pleural Mesothelioma This type of the deadly disease affects the lining of the chest cavity and lungs. As the cancer develops, fluids may build up between the lining of the lungs and chest cavity, causing pain and shortness of breath.
The most common form of mesothelioma, pleural mesothelioma is caused by the inhalation or ingestion of asbestos fibers. Over time these fibers enter the body's tissue, spreading the disease throughout the body's membranes. Unfortunately, like many other forms of cancer, mesothelioma is not easily diagnosed until 10 to 50 years of the initial exposure.
Peritoneal Mesothelioma This form of mesothelioma affects the abdominal area and is developed in the same manner as the pleural version of the disease. Again, the symptoms of this form of cancer are not usually detected until several decades after the initial exposure. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, weight loss, fever, and anemia.
Pericardial Mesothelioma Although this form of cancer is rare, it shares many characteristics with the pleural and peritoneal forms of the disease. Pericardial mesothelioma affects the area of the heart and is the result of asbestos exposure. Symptoms may include chest pain, constant cough, shortness of breath, and even palpitations.
A Lawyer Can Help If you have developed mesothelioma due to exposure to asbestos, the person or company responsible for the dangerous source of asbestos may be held legally responsible for your pain and suffering. Contact an attorney immediately to learn more about your legal options.
During your first meeting with your attorney be sure to bring:
- Your medical records - Possible areas of exposure - Work history - Social security records

Your Lung Cancer Symptoms in a Nutshell

In the early stages of lung cancer, often, you will have no symptoms. It is as the cancer grows that the symptoms begin to appear. Here's what you should be looking for when you suspect that you have lung cancer symptoms.
Some of these symptoms may include a cough that gets worse or doesn't seem to want to go away, breathing problems (including shortness of breath or wheezing), a constant chest pain... especially when you cough, at times you may be coughing up blood.
This is accompanied with a hoarse voice, frequent chest infections (such as pneumonia), or an infection that doesn't go away, feeling fatigued all of the time (feeling very tired all the time), unexplained weight loss, and a loss of appetite.
Be aware that other health problems may also cause some of these same symptoms. Whatever the case, you need to immediately get checked by your doctor.
These conditions are also symptomatic of many other lung problems, so a person who has any of these symptoms should definitely pursue the cause until one is sure of the problem. When a person goes for an exam, the doctor may ask many questions about the person's medical history, including questions about the patient's exposure to hazardous substances.
More often than not, a person having symptoms of lung cancer will be given physical exam. If the patient has a cough that produces a sputum (mucus), the mucus itself might be examined for cancer cells. The doctor will order a chest X-ray or specialized X-ray such as the CT scan, which helps to locate any abnormal spots in the lungs. The doctor may insert a small tube called a bronchoscope through the nose or mouth and down the throat, to look inside the airways and lungs and take a sample, or biopsy, of the tumor. This is just one of several ways in which a doctor may take a biopsy sample.
However, more and more doctors are using a form of CT scan in smokers to spot small lung cancers, which are more likely to be cured as compared to a large large tumor. The technique, called helical low-dose CT scan, is much more sensitive than a regular X-ray and can detect tumors when they are very small, which would otherwise not been on a regular x-ray.

Lung Cancer Treatment Explored

Lung cancer currently ranks as the leading cause of cancer related death in men and women. Although continuing to decline in men, incidence rates remain stable in women, following an increase throughout the 1990's. Trends in lung cancer related deaths, are largely attributed to trends in smoking over the past several decades. In 2008, the American Cancer Society estimates 215,020 new cases will be diagnosed and 161,870 deaths due to lung cancer will occur in the United States alone...
Traditional treatment for lung cancer are surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapies, ans photodtnamic therapy.
Your treatment will depend on what kind of lung cancer you have, and what stage your cancer is at (how serious it is).
In the case of surgery... there are many kinds of surgery for lung cancer, such as pneumonectomy (where one entire lung is removed), lobectomy (where a section "lobe" of the lung is removed), a segmentectomy / wedge resection (where part of a lobe is removed), laser surgery ( where a high-energy beam of light destroys the cancer cells in a tumor).
In the case of radiation therapy... this therapy uses high-energy radiation to kill cancer cells. The radiation can be delivered by a machine that directs the high-energy rays towards your cancer, or by a small radioactive pellet that gets implanted in or near the tumor.
In the case of chemotherapy... means taking anti-cancer drugs, either by swallowing them or by injection. One or more chemotherapy drugs may be administered through a vein in your arm (intravenously) or taken orally. A combination of drugs usually is given in a series of treatments over a period of weeks or months, with breaks in between so that your body can recover.
In the case of targeted drug therapy... these are newer cancer treatments that work by targeting specific abnormalities in cancer cells. Targeted therapy options for treating lung cancer include...
Bevacizumab (Avastin), which stops a tumor from creating a new blood supply. Blood vessels that connect to tumors can supply oxygen and nutrients to the tumor, allowing it to grow. Bevacizumab is usually used in combination with chemotherapy and is approved for advanced and recurrent non-small cell lung cancer. Bevacizumab carries a risk of severe bleeding.
Erlotinib (Tarceva), which blocks chemicals that signal the cancer cells to grow and divide. Erlotinib is approved for people with advanced and recurrent non-small cell lung cancer that haven't been helped by chemotherapy. Erlotinib side effects include a skin rash and diarrhea.
Doctors are getting better at diagnosing and treating lung cancer, which means people with lung cancer have a better chance of recovering and living longer. Still, lung cancer is one of the deadliest cancers. It's important for people with lung cancer to know what to expect and to plan for the future. It's also important to remember that not all lung cancers are the same, and that the treatment or the prognosis for one patient with lung cancer may be very different than the next person with lung cancer.
Some people choose to use alternative therapies as lung cancer treatment instead of conventional treatments or medicine, because when one begins to understand why cells have become cancerous in the first place, it makes sense to try and reverse the process.
For instance, we all know or should know that a weakened immune system leads to cancer... while a strong immune system seeks out and destroys cancer cells. For most of your life, the immune system has successfully dealt with cancer cells, killing them off as they developed. That's its job. For cancer to have developed in you, your immune system must have become worn out, ineffective and unable to deal with the cancer cells.
Thus it is vital in your battle against cancer to strengthen the immune system. Especially if you are getting medical treatments that wipe out the immune system, and make the body more acidic to boot. Many natural supplements and a proper diet supports the immune system. The other concern is to make sure you take enough. Lung cancer is not something to pussyfoot around with.

The Most Important Asbestos Related Information

Many asbestos related information is found in historical chronicles which say that this mineral was a favorite of the ancient Greeks, especially for its fire proof, malleability and insulation properties. This mineral has been used extensively in manufacturing in a wide variety of asbestos products, even though they knew that continuous exposure to it could be fatal to humans.
The asbestos cancer was not only observed in those who were directly exposed to this mineral, but also their families. A number of other maladies were identified as the direct outcome from exposure to the mineral.
The most important asbestos related information is that it can be fatal to humans. The onset of the disease is extremely slow, sometimes taking some 40 years to fully develop; however, once the disease starts manifesting itself, it is only a matter of months before the person dies. They never believed, first of all, that the disease, from which they were suffering in their old age (60s and 70s), was actually the result of their lifetime exposure to asbestos products and other materials containing asbestos.
For example, a family who lived under an asbestos roof didn't know that breathing it in every day of their lives, ingesting food containing particles of asbestos and allowing it to settle on their skin and eyes, and inhaling it through the mouth and nose, would put them at high risk to develop asbestos cancer sooner or later.
All those who were somehow or other exposed to any type of material containing asbestos risked developing some diseases, including the fatal mesothelioma or asbestos cancer. The industry was at one time almost overwhelmed by the presence of asbestos products; so much so that it involved a wide cross section of workers, such as carpenters, electricians, painters, bricklayers, mechanics, plasterers, and so on.
These people become the prime targets of this cancer along with their families and friends. According to reliable asbestos related information, it is next to impossible to cure these diseases; therefore the best thing you could do was to avoid being around the substance. Awareness, in this case, became the only weapon, since prevention seems to be the only cure.
In short, you can easily quote any asbestos related information to explain why so many people fell prey to asbestos cancer. They were literally slowly poisoned across decades of exposure to this killer mineral. The most tragic of all is the fact that the families of all these people too were affected and put at high risk without their knowledge.
Since the disease develops without any symptoms, no one could detect it in time. This meant that when the disease was discovered, the asbestos mesothelioma was in its last stages.

Lung Cancer - Early Detection is Important

Lung cancer was a relatively rare disease at the beginning of the century, but is now the most common cancer in the world. Different factors are suspected to be related to this disease, such as exposition to asbestos or to radon, or as food or genetic factors. None of them, however, are as important as tobacco in the incidence and mortality of lung cancer. A considerable increase in tobacco consumption in industrialized countries over the past century has been observed.
Now it is the second most common cancer, accounting for about one out of six malignancies in men and one out of ten in women. And all the researches points to smoking as the cause. As one specialist in the field reports, "how long will it takes to get cancer depends on how many cigarettes you smoke a day." However, studies shows that quitting smoking does lower the risk.
Lung cancers are mainly of two types: small-cell-lung-cancer - also known as oat cell cancer, since it resembles oat grains and non-small-cell-lung-cancer. The aggressiveness of the disease and treatment option, depend on the type of cancer diagnosed. Many types of lung cancer grow & spread very quickly and since the lungs are vital organs, hence it is critically important to detect & treat the same - usually by surgery for removal of tumor.
Men between 55 and 65 years of age and women of about 70 years are at a greater risk of having lung cancer. Smokers have 11 to 18 times greater risk of developing lung cancer than non-smokers. Women smokers have 5 to 15 times greater risk than non-smoking women. The risk increases with the number of cigarettes smoked per day and the number of years the person has smoked. The risk of lung cancer for non smokers who are exposed to smoke in the environment is as much as 35 percent higher than that of those who are not.
Signs and Symptoms
In many cases, symptoms do not appear until the cancer is at its peak stage. However, by the time a tumor does cause changes within the lungs. Signs are:
· Coughing with blood in sputum; · Chest, arm or shoulder pain; · Loss of appetite; · Weight loss; · Recurring pneumonia ; · SOB (shortness of breath); · Bone pain; · Hoarseness; · Fatigue; · Swelling of neck or face; · Headaches.
Early detection
There are no routine screening tests for lung cancer. Detection at an early stage is possible with sputum analysis and some doctors order these tests, especially for people who smoke. However there is no evidence that such attempts at lung cancer screening have a positive impact on treatments.
Considering the observed trends in lung cancer mortality, it is crucial for public health authorities and stakeholders to have a quantification of lung cancer mortality in the years to come.

Lung Cancer - A Closer Look!

Understandingly, lung cancer starts in the cells of the lungs. It is a disease of uncontrolled cell growth in the tissues of the lung.
Most people know that the lungs are in the chest, one on each side of the heart. The right lung has three main parts, called lobes. The left lung is a bit smaller and has two lobes. The lungs are cushioned and protected by a thin covering called the pleura. The pleura has two layers of tissue: one layer covers the lungs and the other lines the inside wall of the chest. There is a small amount of fluid (pleural fluid) between the two layers of the pleura. So this basically describes what lungs are... but what are they for?
You use your lungs when you breathe. The air you take in through your nose or mouth flows down the trachea (windpipe). The trachea divides into two tubes called the left and right bronchi, which carry air to each lung. Once inside the lung, the bronchi divide into smaller and smaller tubes called bronchioles. Each bronchiole ends in a cluster of tiny air sacs called alveoli. The alveoli take oxygen from the air you breathe in and pass it into the blood for circulation to all parts of your body. The alveoli also remove carbon dioxide from the blood, which is pushed out of the lungs when you exhale. So now you understand the main purpose of your lungs... and now to a closer look at lung cancer.
What most people don't know is that there are two types of lung cancer. The most common type is the non-small cell , also known as (NSCLC). This cancer grows more slowly than the small cell type. While the small-cell grows quickly and often spreads to distant parts of the body.
There is also a rare type of cancer called pleural mesothelioma which is often mistakenly called a lung cancer. But pleural mesothelioma starts in the lining of the lung and is very different from cancer that starts in the lung.
Now for the three types of non-small cancers, which are squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and large cell carcinoma. These account for about 80% of lung cancers, while small-cell (also called oat) accounts for about 20%. The vast majority of all lung cancers are of the carcinoma type.
It's important to understand these three types of cancers because treatment varies accordingly. Non-small cell lung carcinoma for example, is sometimes treated with surgery, while small cell lung carcinoma, usually responds better to chemotherapy and radiation.

Mesothelioma Treatment - Lung Cancer Mesothelioma Diagnosis

Pleural is a bad disease that can lead to death, the disease is very dangerous and only happens if someone familiar with asbestos materials. These materials were in the business of transformation and construction in the past. Most cases, admissions to the United States, the victims were working in production and manufacture of construction products such as cement.
The tumors of the mesothelioma can develop in the thoracic cavity. Pleura are known as the outer lining of the lungs. As a result of exposure to asbestos, pleural symptoms can vary between 30 and 50 years.
The treatment options, making available to treat pleural may be a combination of the option of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy option. There are still many other options such as alternative medicines, which can also be effective.
In the surgery option, the doctor may cut some parts of the region concerned in the thoracic cavity for the first tests. The doctor may also remove the tissue around the tumor so that there had no chance for all malignancies renovated.
In chemical chemotherapy option, we can use certain types of chemicals to kill cancer cells and tumors. It can be effective with a few cases, and it might not be effective otherwise. Physicians can mix the two options.
In radiotherapy, we can use X-ray and gamma radiation to kill infected cells, there might be effective in certain cases. Please contact your doctor. Anyway, you must consult you doctor a good treatment plan. They can make a good combination of the three available options to make a an effective treatment for your case.

Texas Mesothelioma Lawyers

Texas mesothelioma lawyers are very compassionate and can understand the fear and confusion that a person will face that is diagnosed with mesothelioma or other forms of cancer. With treatment, 14% of patients can have a 5 years survival rate, a high achievement in lung cancer terms. Unfortunately, most patient will die within 12 to 18 months of diagnosis.
Small cell lung carcinoma is treated primarily with chemotherapy and radiation, as surgery has no quantifiable influence on survival. Lung cancer survival rates are higher the earlier the cancer is diagnosed. However, more than two-thirds of lung cancers are diagnosed at a late stage and so survival rates for these patients are lower.
It is no wonder that more and more people are turning to alternative treatments and switching to a cancer friendly diet as their last resort. Alternative treatments are cheap and is within the control of the patient and their family members. A major component of alternative medicine lies in what you eat.
The process start with identifying the foods that can cause or worsen cancer. The idea is to stop eating harmful food before you begin to consume specific anti-cancer food. Be prepared to forgo many types of food that are known and not-so-known to contain cancer-causing fungi. Then, eating cancer-friendly food and cancer-curing food can commence to produce optimal results without obstacles.
Cancer can thrive under these 4 situations in our body:
Weak immunity Acidity Excessive Toxin Lack Of Oxygen
To thoroughly eliminate cancer, you have to rectify each and every one of the above scenario. Apart from diet, maintaining an active lifestyle, smoking cessation and living in a smoke-free and asbestos free environment will greatly increase your chance of survival.

Asbestos Exposure and Lung Cancer

In the UK, asbestos accounts for 2-3% of male lung cancer deaths. There is a complementary effect between tobacco smoking and asbestos in the formation of lung cancer. Asbestos can also cause cancer of the pleura, called mesothelioma (which is different from lung cancer).
People who work with asbestos have a higher risk of getting lung cancer. People exposed to industrial substances or building materials such as asbestos, nickel, chromium compounds, arsenic, polycyclic hydrocarbons and chloromethyl ether also have a higher risk of developing lung cancer. It is also important to try to avoid second-hand tobacco smoke, radon, and pollution, which can increase a person's risk of getting lung cancer.
People who have been exposed to asbestos will only diagnosed with lung cancer twenty to thirty years down the road. If you suspect that you may be exposed to the hazards listed above, look out for symptoms that are associated with lung cancer.
dyspnea (shortness of breath) hemoptysis (coughing up blood) chronic coughing or change in regular coughing pattern wheezing chest pain or pain in the abdomen cachexia (weight loss) fatigue and loss of appetite sphonia (hoarse voice) clubbing of the fingernails (uncommon) dysphagia (difficulty swallowing). repeated chest infections asthma fluid around the lung swelling in the neck or face lethargic
Some lung cancers do not cause any noticeable symptoms until they are quite advanced and have spread to other parts of the body. By the time people have symptoms, lung cancer is generally at stage four, having already spread to another major organ.
Additional symptoms that may also occur with lung cancer includes:
Swallowing difficulty Nail problems Joint pain Facial paralysis Eyelid drooping Bone pain or tenderness.

5 Things to Do If You Are Diagnosed With Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a cancer in the lining of the lung, called the pleura as a result of significant asbestos exposure. It is a silent killer that only produce symptoms 20 to 40 years from the initial exposure when it is often too late for curative treatments.
Because most patients have only months to live after diagnosis, you need to know what to do right from the very beginning to safeguard your survival and the welfare of your family member.
Step #1 Seek a second opinion. One doctor can put you strictly on palliative (comfort) treatment while others will give you treatments to kill cancer cells. Get your doctor to run through each treatment review to see which one is applicable to you.
Step #2 Engage a mesothelioma lawyer to represent you in filing for compensation. Mesothelioma is predominantly caused by asbestos, a known cancer-causing agent that kept on being used for more than 50 years despite its hazardous nature. A good mesothelioma lawyer not will ensure you get in the justice you deserve in financial compensation to pay for medical fees and other expenses. Note that certain states have a time restriction in filing for a claim, so make sure you do this soon.
Step #3 Do not stop at conventional treatment at the doctor's office. Seek out alternative mesothelioma cancer treatment such as traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Brandt grape therapy, Bill Henderson's protocol, Simoncini baking soda treatments and other alternative can reportedly reverse the effect of cancer.
Step#4 Change your lifestyle and diet. Needless to say, you must absolutely stop smoking. Stay away from smoke-filled environment and inhaling second-hand smoke. Detox your body regularly and adopt a mainly vegan diet. Exercise at least half an hour a day everyday to keep you active.
Step#5 Maintain a positive attitude in fighting mesothelioma. Read up on it, understand it and you will know how to contain it. New drugs and treatments are found all the time so be sure to keep yourself informed.
Patients are usually too devastated to realize that there are 101 things they can do to change or improvised the situation they are in, upon learning about their illness. When they do eventually see the whole picture, it's too late to act. Do not make the same mistake, with a little knowledge and guidance, you can beat mesothelioma.

Pleura Disease and Mesothelioma

Often, the exposure to asbestos will cause harm to the lining of the lungs, called pleura. Calcium deposits in the scars caused by asbestos fibers will go through 'calcification' which cause it to harden.
Fluid effusion may be accumulated around the lung. This condition do not present any immediate harm and will dissolve by itself and subsequently return later. This repeated fluid accumulation gradually cause 'diffuse pleural thickening', which is the thickening of the entire pleura. This thickening process may end up as scar tissue and even make it difficult for the lungs to expand.
Malignant Mesothelioma Lung Cancer
Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that affects the pleura or the abdomen (peritonuem) and it is caused only by asbestos exposure. There are two types of mesothelioma cells - epithelial and sarcomatoid.
Even a relatively short amount of exposure to asbestos (one month or two) can manifest itself into mesothelioma cancer or even lung cancer 20, 30, 50, or even 70 years later.
Like most disease, early detection and treatment can significantly increase recovery chance. Unfortunately, mesothelioma lung cancer is often asymptomatic and treatments are often too late when a patient is diagnosed. Many will die from the disease in the following 12 months of diagnosis, and most will not survive more than 18 months.
Therefore, some treatments for mesothelioma is aim to to relieve symptoms rather than to cure the disease. If your doctor recommends palliative (comfort) treatments, he/she is fore seeing that your illness cannot be cured. In this scenario, get a second opinion or check out what alternative treatment have to offer.

Asbestos Related Mesothelioma Cancer - Blood Test

The pleural mesothelioma is a rare disease of the lining of the lung and chest cavity that is usually cancerous. The cause is asbestos exposure and it could take 15 to 35 years to develop this disease, counting from the time of asbestos exposure.
However, the latest researches have pointed out a blood test that might help screening for pleural mesothelioma by checking the blood for high levels of a protein called osteopontin. This is important because blood osteopontin levels rise dramatically in the early stages of the disease. This kind of cancer is a deadly asbestos related illness.
This exposure can be direct with the substance or second-hand, with a family member whose clothing or skin carried the asbestos into the home. Obviously in the last case, the development of the disease could take more than 35 years.
Because of pleural mesothelioma it is difficult to detect it in its early, it has high mortality rates and a life expectancy of few months. However, with the new blood test mentioned above, it is expected a higher percentage of probabilities to detect it. Moreover, it can detect other kinds of asbestos related cancers. But in those cases, the findings need further studies, other kind of cancer that could be early detected through blood test is for instance "Ovarian Cancer".
So, the earlier pleural mesothelioma cancer is detected, the better chances that people affected have. If you want to know how to do it, a blood test might be very useful in these cases.

The Silent Death Sentence

Most people today are reasonably health conscious and even those who don't give it too much consideration are more informed about health issues than previous generations. This is due in large part, to the wealth of information available today on all things health related - both online and in the printed press.
People are now more likely to be aware of the surrounding environment in which they live or work in, but in these heavily industrialized times there are hidden dangers and unseen risks in even the most innocent looking buildings.
Asbestos is one such hidden danger and exposure to it can have serious consequences. Little was known about it in the early 60s and unfortunately, the lack of knowledge resulted in a lack of precautions that many regret today.
Asbestos was commonly used in boilers, building & fireproofing material, insulation and soundproofing products as well as in the production of slates and tile roofing. The use of this hazardous substance is now very carefully monitored internationally after some retired workers began to develop respiratory problems resulting from exposure to toxic fibres within asbestos. It has been banned for use in Britain since 1969.
People who have worked in places where they regularly inhaled asbestos particles have sometimes developed Mesothelioma, a form of cancer that can take between 20 and 40 years to develop after exposure to asbestos dust. Shortness of breath and chest pains are among the most common symptoms.
Builders, electricians, plumbers, factory workers and their immediate families (asbestos particles can be brought into the home via clothing) are most at risk, but recent reports suggest that teachers, children and nurses are also believed to have been put in danger since asbestos was used in the construction of many schools and hospitals.
Asbestos fibres, when released into the air and inhaled can have very serious effects on health and this topic made the news again after the events of 9/11 when it became known that this is one of the problems which survivors of the attack on New York's World Trade Centre, as well as hundreds of workers involved in the rescue operation, may eventually face.
Unsurprisingly, the consequences of exposure to asbestos has caused a surge in mesothelioma and asbestos claims, mostly from those employed in the construction and manufacturing industries, but also from family members who had secondary contact with asbestos particles.
Claims can be placed many years after a person has left the employment of the related industry as symptoms can take long periods to develop. This has now become a significant issue within the insurance industry as many people who were exposed feel their employers simply did not do enough in terms of providing information and protecting them from the risks involved.
Isla Campbell writes on a number of topics on behalf of a digital marketing agency and a variety of clients. It strikes about 3000 hard working people in the United States each year, mostly men over 40 years of age. It is caused by direct asbestos exposure, or from asbestos dust brought home on the worker's clothing.
During the twentieth century, around 30 million tons of asbestos were used in industrial sites, homes, schools, shipyards and commercial buildings in the United States. Many asbestos-containing products remain in buildings, ships, industrial facilities and other environments where the fibers can become airborne.
Mesothelioma is a cancer of the cells that make up the lining of the lungs, the inside of the ribs, and around the abdominal organs. In the past it was thought that cigarette smoking caused mesothelioma. However, with medical research it has been proven that it is caused by asbestos exposures.
Here's what the asbestos does. When a person breathes in asbestos fibers, the fibers then travel to the ends of the small air passages reaching the lining of the lungs and damaging the mesothelial cells (the lining of the lung cells). If swallowed, these fibers can reach the lining of the abdominal cavity where they play a part in causing a cancer called peritoneal mesothelioma. The chance of ever getting mesothelioma rises with the intensity and duration of your exposure to asbestos.
And you may not get mesothelioma right away. Mesothelioma can even develop 20 to 50 years after the initial exposure. The average life span of an inflicted person from the time of diagnosis with mesothelioma until death is less the 6 months. So, who's at risk?
People who work or used to work in asbestos environment, and spouses or children being exposed to asbestos fibers from work clothing brought home. Also, if you live in a house that was built in the mid 70's or before, you have to know that most insulation materials, including pipe insulation; boiler insulation; fireproofing spray; firebrick and gunnite (used for internal insulation of furnaces and boilers); also many construction materials, such as roof, floor and ceiling tiles contained asbestos. You too might be exposed to asbestos. You need to have your house checked for any asbestos presence.
If you have ever been exposed to asbestos directly or indirectly, early symptoms of mesothelioma can include shortness of breath and/or pain in the lower back or at the side of your chest. Less often, you can experience trouble swallowing, cough, fever, sweating, fatigue, and weight loss. So, these early symptoms sometimes may delay your diagnosis as these symptoms are also related to other illnesses. It will be up to you to mention to your doctor the possibility of asbestos exposure, because your doctor may not suspect it right away. Your doctor then, has to use x-rays, CT scans or a breathing test to detect the presence of asbestos. He or she can further perform a biopsy (taking samples of your lung tissue) to confirm it.
If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you were most likely exposed to asbestos. Many asbestos manufacturers and even distributors knew for decades that asbestos was hazardous, yet they did not warn people of those hazards. As a result, you have a right of recovery against those manufacturers, which on the other hand can help pay the costs of treatment and provide compensation for your pain and suffering.
The first thing you need to do after being diagnosed with mesothelioma is contact a lawyer immediately to see if you have a case. Think about the source of your exposure, regardless of how long ago that might have been. Try to find the responsible parties. Whether that was your spouse's work, your work, your parents' work, the house you lived in, or anything at all that might have exposed you to asbestos.
Also, you need to ask your lawyer about your statute of limitations. Even if your family member has died from mesothelioma, you may still be eligible to file a claim. Even if you've never worked at a place that directly dealt with asbestos but you have gotten it through asbestos fibers brought home on clothes worn by a spouse or parent who worked in an asbestos environment, you may still be eligible to file a claim.
If diagnosed with mesothelioma, your doctor can only do so much to save your life. It will be mostly you religiously following the health directions given to you by your doctor and educating yourself about mesothelioma. Your doctor can help you save your life, but you can also help him or her help you by knowing how to deal with it.

A Brief Overview of the Malignant Mesothelioma Disease

Malignant mesothelioma is the name given to asbestos cancer because it is the result of continuous exposure to products or materials that contain asbestos. In the past, asbestos was considered a very useful and versatile mineral since it has insulation and fire retardant properties.
This type of cancer attacks the outer membrane that covers and protects internal organs, such as the lungs, heart, abdomen, etc. Since this ailment is fatal in most cases, it is best that measures are taken to prevent it. This is why it is important for those people who work in close proximity to the substance, to be wary of the health risk.
Asbestos mesothelioma is almost always fatal, not because it is more dangerous than any other forms of cancer, but because it takes some 20-25 years to develop to its full blown condition without any major symptoms. The asbestos cancer is discovered only when it manifests acute symptoms, at which time it is usually too late to do anything other than make the patient comfortable. By this time, the patient is likely to be advancing in age as well; most people diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer are aged 60-70 and their bodies may be worn out in more ways than one.
A very important thing to note is that malignant mesothelioma affects not only those who come in direct contact to material containing asbestos, but also those who come into contact with the people who work with it. This is why and how many of the family members of those who work with asbestos products are also found suffering from this deadly disease.
It so happens that microscopic particles of asbestos get attached to the clothing, hair, skin and nails of the people who are working with this mineral and are carried home on a regular basis, thus infecting the family members or other people with whom the worker has close contact.
There is no cure for asbestos mesothelioma and therefore, it is wise to ensure that you and your family members do not come in contact with it in the first place. Since malignant mesothelioma is known to affect both those who are directly and indirectly exposed to it, awareness should be of the utmost importance so people will have periodical check ups to ensure that they have not contacted the dreaded asbestos cancer. This is a silent disease, and therefore there is no other way to protect yourself or your family members from it and avert tragedies.

Asbestos Mesothelioma Risk - The Silent Killer Stalking in Your Vicinity?

What are the asbestos risk factors? Mesothelioma cancer statistics indicate that specific environments, industries and jobs have a higher mesothelioma risk. The risk of getting cancer from asbestos is very real.
A risk factor is anything that increases your chance of getting the diagnosis: malignant mesothelioma. But having a risk factor, or even several asbestos disease risk factors, does not mean that you will develop mesothelioma lung cancer.
Exposure to asbestos is the main risk factor for developing mesothelioma injury. This injury could develop into full fledged mesothelioma lung cancer.
So, what are the risk asbestos factors? And how do we manage the risk of asbestos exposure?
Mesothelioma Statistics
Mesothelioma statistics reveal that 2,000 to 3,000 new mesothelioma cases annually receive the diagnosis: malignant mesothelioma. Approximately 70 to 80 percent of all cases of mesothelioma are found to be the direct result of asbestos exposure.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as many as a three quarter million schools and public buildings in the country today contain asbestos insulation. These were built before new asbestos mesothelioma law started to constrain the use of asbestos early in the 1970s. Asbestos insulation may be found in as many as 10% to 15% of schools in the United States.
Industrial Risk
What is the industrial asbestos risk of your work place? The mesothelioma risk attached to various industries can be plotted on a continuum: from high industrial risk - to the least risk.
Firstly, you must identify asbestos content inherent to your building, equipment, raw materials or products. Then compare this information with mesothelioma statistics for your industry.
Environmental Risk
What is the asbestos risk of your environment? Asbestos minerals are widespread in the global environment.
Asbestos risk may occur in large natural deposits, or as contaminants in other minerals and products. If you are exposed to asbestos, many factors determine asbestos exposure risk and potential asbestos related diseases.
These factors include the how much, how long, the mineral form and size distribution, and how you come in contact with it. Studies have shown that smokers are more prone to asbestos disease than non-smokers.
Does the Silent Killer stalk your work place? The Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations (CAWR) place the duty on employers to identify and assess occupational asbestos risk.
Asbestos Disease Risk
Asbestos disease risk, is the risk of serious disease after inhaling asbestos dust. In industry, they separate and process asbestos fibers into new compounds and textures, forming a microscopic dust.
If inhaled, it can collect in the lungs, stomach or other organs and eventually lead to the development of serious, life threatening asbestos diseases. A mesothelioma prognosis is almost never favourable.
Asbestos Products Risk
Asbestos products risk? The Silent Killer Stalking? The risk of mesothelioma lung cancer from asbestos insulation, asbestos siding, asbestos tile, asbestos flooring, and a host of other products exist everywhere around us.
Asbestos was not only cheap to buy, but it is also pliable and sometimes, soft like cotton. Some forms of asbestos fibers have cloth-like qualities.
Asbestos fibers can therefore be easily woven into fireproof protection apparel for rescue officials and firefighters. Items for other professionals and workers, who are exposed to high heat, are also manufactured, creating asbestos products risk.
Its industrial properties was in strong demand during the industrial revolution. An estimated 4,000 products made during the 1900s contained asbestos fibers
Asbestos Risk Assessment
You need specialist advisors to perform an asbestos risk assessment in managing and preventing mesothelioma injury. Their asbestos testing protocol and results are also invaluable for mesothelioma research projects.
All entries in a company's asbestos register become vital in the event that you receive a call from an asbestos lawyer who works on a mesothelioma claim.
City and town management are increasingly being held responsible for asbestos exposure in the areas under their management.
It is expected that the focus in this regard will soon expand to seaside venues. Asbestos used to be the building material of choice close to the oceans.
Asbestos Risk Management
Asbestos risk management is the legal responsibility of every manager or owner of a business, or landlord. Asbestos mesothelioma law is clear i.t.o. management's responsibility.
There is an increased global effort to minimise asbestos exposure, cut down on mesothelioma injury and asbestosis mesothelioma.
This was driven in part by the large asbestos settlements granted in mesothelioma lawsuits.
Early in the 1970s we saw the first drafts of mesothelioma cancer law accepted by various regulating bodies of developed countries internationally.
However in a country like South Africa, laws were only made in 2008 to finally control the mining and manufacturing of asbestos products.
Most asbestos products are reasonably safe if it is kept undisturbed, painted and well maintained. However, most people will be surprised to notice the large number of asbestos products in their living and work environments, that are poorly maintained.
Pieter Pepler is a management consultant to small and medium enterpises. He has a keen interest in in health aspects and spends much of his time researching and writing about the causes and alternative treatment options for the natural treatment of various chronic diseases.

Lung Mesothelioma Cancer

It is a of cancer whose occurrence is common as an aftermath of previous longterm exposure to asbestos. It can basically be sub categorized into pleural mesothelioma lung cancer and the peritoneal mesothelioma cancer. The kind under discussion includes the alignment of the cancer besides the affected lung. It falls into the category of the rarest kinds of cancer.
Common symptoms include wheezing and pain in the lungs and the overall chest wall. In spite of the above mentioned symptom this disease may not show itself for over two decades. The advanced stage might embody a tumor mass, preceding pneumothorax or a conceivable lung collapse. Although its circulation to the remaining body is unusual but not impossible. The pleural tumor presents itself on the face of the affected lung.
Its diagnosis is ordinarily an arduous task due to the similarity of symptoms that are mutual with several other diseases. The diagnosis procedure initiates with the review of the individual's medical history. A chest X-ray or CT scan follows. If any unusual activity is noticed a biopsy and a microscopic examination ensues.
If its presence is ascertained, subjection to chemotherapy and the radiation therapy is unavoidable. Several a times' surgery is also sought.
The procedure of chemotherapy encompasses regular use of medicines for targeting the cancerous cells and for additional help against putting up a strong fight against the disease; the surgery aims at their complete elimination whereas the radiation employs the use of the high-energy rays for terminating the tarrying killer cells in the body. The Intra operative photodynamic therapy is the new treatment method on the block that involves treatment via medicines and employs the use of a powerful light for dispatching the cancer cells. The happenings of a recovery are heavily reliant not only on the size of the cancer but also on the individual's response to the specific treatment.
Sarfaraz was born and raised in Karachi, Pakistan, surrounded by traffic and technology. There are 3 main types of asbestos minerals (chrysotile, amosite and crocidolite) and 6 different varieties. Asbestos was used thousands of years ago by the Greeks who realized these benefits of asbestos. The use of asbestos continued through history and became a very popular product during the industrial revolution in the 1860's.
In 1879 the first development of an asbestos mine was put into motion. Because of the unique properties of asbestos, it has been able to be used for many different products over the years. Asbestos has been used in insulation, pipe coverings, brake pads, cement, ceiling tiles, rugs, paints and a variety of other products. The first recorded death due to asbestos was in 1906, further studies indicated an increase in lung related diseases in people that were around asbestos on a regular basis. Asbestos was later banned in the early 1980's due to the fact that the fibers were causing lung diseases/cancer and death.
Asbestos fibers are very sharp and barbed; it is for this reason that when a person inhales these fibers they become lodged in the lining of the lungs, and stay there. This over time causes asbestosis which is irreversible and can lead to scarring of he lungs. Another common hazard of asbestos is Mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos fibers. It develops in the thin membranes that line the lungs and abdomen. Unfortunately this type of cancer is often inoperable and fatal. On top of lung related cancers asbestos has also been found to cause cancer of the esophagus, stomach, large intestine, and rectum.
Mesothelioma can sometimes be hard to diagnose as the symptoms are a lot like other lung conditions. On top of that it usually takes between 20-30 years for symptoms to become noticeable. Symptoms often shown by individuals suffering from mesothelioma include:
• chest pain • fluid surrounding the lungs • shortness of breath • fatigue • wheezing, hoarseness, or cough • coughing up blood
In some cases if the individual's mesothelioma cancer is severe enough or in the advanced stages it has been documented that the individual could experience a collapse of the infected lung. Mesothelioma can also attack the lining of the abdomen. Individuals with mesothelioma in the abdomen include:
• abdominal pain • a buildup of fluid in the abdomen • a mass in the abdomen • problems with bowel function • weight loss
Diagnosis of Mesothelioma is often done through a series of tests on the lungs. Diagnosis may start out with a look into your medical history to see if you are at risk for such a conditions. If it is found that you've had a lot of exposure to asbestos fibers your doctor may start out with a physical examination followed by a chest x-ray and then some lung function testing. The x-ray can be used to check for the thickening of the pleural wall, which is often associated with mesothelioma. A cat scan is also taken and if the results show an abnormal amount of fluid, samples of this fluid are taken out via a pleural tap(chest drain), the cells in the fluid are then studied and if no malignant cells are found then although mesothelioma is not completely ruled out, it usually points to another type of condition. If this study of the fluid reveals malignant cells then a biopsy will be needed in order to finish diagnosis of mesothelioma.
Treatment of mesothelioma is very hard as the malignant cells that make up this cancer are very stubborn and do not take well to the different forms of treatment out there for most cancers today. Some of the common practices for treating mesothelioma are an extraction of the chest lining and or the inner chest lining is completely removed. Radiation and Chemotherapy has also been used but the results have not been very successful.
The people at risk for this type of cancer, and related diseases are mostly people who have had to work around products that were made of asbestos. These include electricians, plumbers, carpenters, sanitation workers, roofers, etc. It is estimated that today in America there are approx 800,000 people who suffer from some kind of asbestos related disease. It is also estimated that the deaths due to Asbestosis are on the rise from 127 in 1979 to 825 in 2005. Mesothelioma deaths have gone up from 153 in 1968 to 2037 in 2005 and plan to be at 2450 between 2011 and 2015.
Today for the most part asbestos has been completely taken out of everyday life products, and has been replaced with fiberglass and other less harmful materials. It was also found that through heating of asbestos to temperatures above 2500 degrees Celsius that these fibers are transformed into silicate glass that has been shown to be harmless. Today there are lawyers that specialize in Mesothelioma and asbestosis related cases, and may be able to help get you some compensation for suffering and medical costs.

How Severe is the Mesothelioma Disease?

Mesothelioma is a rare but highly aggressive form of cancer and each year, there are between two and three thousand people diagnosed. The number of new cases is expected to increase over the next ten years. There is only one known cause of the cancer, and that is exposure to asbestos.
Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral, which was valued for its durability, fire resistance and insulating properties. It was widely used during the first three quarters of the twentieth century. There were many kinds of products manufactured during this time using asbestos fibers, including concrete, textiles and insulation.
Mesothelioma attacks the membranes that cover the lungs, abdominal cavity and internal organs of the body. There are three main types. The most common type is pleural mesothelioma. This type occurs when asbestos fibers invade the cells of the membrane covering the lungs, known as the pleura.
The second most common type of this cancer is peritoneal mesothelioma, which attacks the peritoneum, or membrane covering the abdominal organs. The rarest type of the asbestos cancer is pericardial mesothelioma, which attacks the membrane covering the heart, or the pericardium.
Treatment for this type of cancer has had little success. Because the asbestos cancer is so fast growing, it is often not diagnosed until the later stages of the disease, when the chance of patient survival is poor. Treatments include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are often given in conjunction with surgery. The chance of being cured with these treatments is slight, and surgery and radiation are often used to simply provide relief from pain and other symptoms. A fairly new type of chemotherapy, called heated chemotherapy, does show some promise for peritoneal mesothelioma.
The chemotherapy drugs are heated and infused into the peritoneum, making it easier for the cancer cells to absorb the chemicals and be killed by them. But sadly, for most people suffering from asbestos cancer, the prognosis remains poor.
Asbestos products were widely manufactured and used for the first three quarters of the twentieth century, in spite of the fact that the manufacturers knew the health risks. Mesothelioma is often not discovered for years or even decades after exposure to asbestos fibers.
Asbestos is still found in many older buildings, continuing to put many at risk for exposure. Unfortunately, cancer from asbestos will continue to be a health threat for many years into the future, but with stricter regulations, not as much as it has been in the past.

Do You Have Enough Information About Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a malignant form of cancer which is developed due to previous exposure to asbestos. The malignant cancer cells develop in protective covering of organs known as mesothelium. The most common sites attacked by these cells are lungs, gastro-intestinal tract and heart.
People who are working at the jobs related to asbestos are at the risk of developing mesothelioma. It is a misconception that mesothelioma is related to smoking. Let`s have a look on the important signs and symptoms of this type of cancer. The earliest symptom of the disease is shortness of the breath which is also known as dyspnoea. The reason for difficult breathing is the fluid accumulated between the lungs and the chest wall. The second common symptom is pain in the region of the chest and abdomen. Other general symptoms can be weight loss and weakness.
There are many modern procedures which are used in diagnosing mesothelioma and other forms of cancer. The most common methods which are used in making the diagnosis are chest x-rays, computerized tomography, biopsy and microscopic examination. Biopsy sample can be taken with the help of a thoracoscope which is inserted in the chest directed by a camera.
There are many treatment options which are being used in many countries but the disease carries a bad prognosis. Like other forms of cancer the mesothelioma is also treated with the help of combination therapy. Treatment methods which are used in treating asbestos cancer are chemotherapy, radiation therapy and sometimes surgery. Research is being conducted to find new treatment options.
Patient suffering from asbestos cancer need legal support for obtaining compensation from the companies. There are many lawyers which are dealing the mesothelioma cases. Every person who is suffering from asbestos cancer is eligible for filling a lawsuit. The patient or his relatives should do a lot of research before selecting an asbestos lawyer. You should go through the work experience of the lawyer or the company providing the legal support. The lawyer should be selected on the basis of his success in mesothelioma cases.
After selecting the lawyer it is very important to spend some time with him. The patient and his relatives should provide all the forms of information. There are many sources which can help you in finding an attorney. You can go through yellow pages. With the help of yellow pages you can easily find several lawyers which specialize in mesothelioma cases.
It is a good idea to look for a lawyer directory online. With the help of a directory you can find an asbestos lawyer in your area. You can also go through several websites and blogs which are devoted to asbestos cancer. It is a good idea look for some law firms. There are many law firms out there which specialize in asbestos cancer cases. Finding good lawyers is not so easy task and needs lots of hard work and commitment. It is a good idea to follow some tips given by the experts.

Treatment Options For Mesothelioma

Nowadays you can find various treatment options for Mesothelioma and other forms of cancer. In this article we will discuss some new forms of treatment. They are many patients who got better results with the help of new chemotherapeutic agents introduced.
Have you heard about Photodynamic Therapy? This is new form of treatment in which photosensitive drugs are injected intravenously. This drug can help in killing diseased cells in the body.
Another method which is being used worldwide is known as immunotherapy. In some countries immunotherapy is known as biological therapy. In this method of treatment immune system of the patient`s body is stimulated to treat the cancer. Immunotherapy modulates the immune system of the patient body. Natural immune system of the human body is very effective in fighting with cancer. The medications which are being used in this form of treatment are known as Biological Response Modifiers. Biological response modifiers are natural component of body`s immune system but nowadays many companies are manufacturing synthetic Biological Response Modifiers.
The third type of therapy which is used as an additional therapy with other forms of treatment is known as Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy. This method can control the mesothelioma locally. The radiation is administered in the region of tumor.
One of the latest forms of therapy is known as Gene therapy. Gene therapy can be effective in many incurable diseases. In this therapy the disease is treated at the DNA level. There are two main types of gene therapy. The first one is called replacement gene therapy and the second one is called Knockout gene therapy. In replacement gene therapy the gene provoking the disease is replaced by a new gene. In knockout gene therapy the gene responsible for provoking the disease is completely removed from the DNA.
All the above stated method of treatments is used in combination. Combination therapy is effective if used in a proper way.
Do you have enough information about the types of mesothelioma? There are three main forms of this cancer. The first one is pleural form which is most common form of disease. The cause of this disease is chronic inhalation of asbestos particles. Asbestos particles aggregated in lungs can provoke cancer. The cancer of the lungs can invade other systems of the human body. Most common malignization sites in the body are gastrointestinal tract and the heart. The cancer speeded to the gastrointestinal tract is known as peritonial mesothelioma. On the other hand the asbestos particles invading heart can provoke pericardial mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is one of the aggressive forms of cancer. It can be treated effectively if the timely diagnosis is made. The treatment options are increasing very fast. The patient should go under extensive diagnostic tests before starting the treatment. The most common diagnostic methods which are being used almost in every country are x-rays, MRI, CT scans and biopsies. All these methods can help the oncologist to find the best treatment suitable for the patient.
Some alternative methods of treatment like acupuncture, massage and hypnosis are also used in addition to the traditional methods of treatment.

Mesothelioma - The Deadly Cancer Related to Asbestos

Today while surfing through Internet I came across a new term (at least for me), that's Mesothelioma. It is a form of Cancer that is caused by physical exposure to Asbestos (a metal used mainly to build bullet proof jackets and fire fighting suits and equipments, as this metal is fire resistant). Most of the internal organs in our body are protected with a layer that is known as Mesothelium, but it is mainly found in lungs, chest, abdominal and heart (though the terms used for each layer related to each organ is different). Mostly lungs are the sensitive organs that are effected by this disease most.
Mostly people who are involved in some sort of jobs that involve asbestos are the ones who get affected. When someone inhales particles of asbestos while working in such kind of jobs these particles reach their lungs. Not only that other people like family members of one who works with some asbestos related job can also get affected, like when washing their cloths etc. So you can imagine how deadly it is. Some people link this disease with smoking which has no fact at all. It is not at all related to smoking.
Symptoms of this disease include shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss also. These are major symptoms of this disease. The diagnosis is simple, through x-ray and ct scan, and can be confirmed with a biopsy of tissue sample and microscopic examination. There are other ways also like examining by inserting a small camera with the help of a tube into the chest. Though its detection seem simple, most of the times it is not detected at early stages. Main therapies for this disease are same as any other cancer like chemotherapy, radiotherapy and in some cases surgery.
I am not a doctor, neither I am anyway related to Medics and all. I just came across this useful information through different resources on Internet, so I compiled it in easy language that a common man understands and put it here so that I can make all of you a bit aware of this, specially those who are in this kind of fields which deal with asbestos.
And interestingly, I came across one more thing, that is law's perspective on Mesothelioma. In their attempt to curb harmful effects of asbestos on human body most of the countries like USA, Australia, UK, New Zealand, France, Canada, Brazil etc. has already banned use of asbestos or products related to use of asbestos long back. But the cause of concern is that developing countries like India are still doesn't seem concerned about it. It is still used in various countries. As it is evident that this metal is dangerous, people who used to work in such jobs that involve use of asbestos have sued their employers lately when they suffered because of it, even now, in countries where asbestos is not banned, labourers sue their employers for compensation when they get affected. In US, govt. is so strict about it that they take it as criminal offense as follow criminal proceedings against employers who engage workers with jobs envolving asbestos. Interesting, in various countries, lots of lawsuits are filed related to this because of which a number of lawyers have become specialised layers of Mesothelioma, they are known as mesothelioma lawyers.
Anyways, my motive is just to spread some information about this, so that people in developing countries come across the dangers of asbestos and this deadly disease.

Overview of Lung Cancer

Brief introduction to Lung Cancer
The specific causes of cancers are still not fully understood. However there has been lots of developments and research being done all over the world. Basically, a cancer arises from the abnormal and uncontrolled division of cells which invade and destroy the surrounding tissues causing death. There are different types of cancers, among them the four most common cancers are breast cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer and prostate cancer. Out of them, lung cancer is very common and is associated with cigarette smoking. Around 5 million deaths occur each year around the world which is caused by tobacco and smoking cigarettes. The stats are increasing overwhelmingly as tobacco is set to kill more and more people in coming years.
Smoking can be very addictive without knowing about it. Many people starts smoking for various reasons for instance, they think that smoking can relieve them from depression or maybe they think it creates a cool self-expression. Some think smoking cigarettes gives pleasure, calms, and relaxes the user. However despite to all those reasons, Smoking is very hazardous to the health and will eventually lead to death. A Smoke from a cigarette contains nearly 4000 deadly chemical agents, carcinogens, carbon mono-oxide, tar, arsenic and are the primary causes of fatal Lung Cancer cases.
There are two major types of Lung Cancers: Small Cell lung Cancers (SCLC) Non-Small cell lung cancers (NSCLC)
Small Cell lung cancers:
Small Cell lung cancers, also known as oat cell carcinoma, are less common than non-small lung cancer. The cells grow more rapidly than NSLC through out the body and spreads to lymph nodes proceeding to other organs such as bones, brain, glands and liver. Studied shows that about 10 % to 15% of all lung cancers falls in this category. Usually, surgery is not a best option for this type of lung cancer.
Non-Small cell lung cancers:
Non-Small cell lung cells are known to be very common cancers. The cells grow and spread slower than SCLC. They all grow and spread in different ways. Smoking is primary reason for this type of lung cancer. NSCLC is known as one of the more lethal cancers and is even deadlier than colon, breast and prostate cancers.
There are three types of non-small cell lung cancers. Squamous cell carcinoma Large cell carcinoma Adenocarcinoma
All of these cancers can be treated if they are spotted in the initial stage. NSLC has four stages, where as SCLC has two stages namely limited stage and In extensive-stage. Generally, treatments of lung cancers involve surgical removal of tumors, Chemotherapy and Radiation therapy. These treatments depend on the stage the cancers at and patients conditions.
The cause of both SCLC and NSCLC is from Smoking cigarettes. There are however several other reasons that many people might not be aware of. For example: second hand smoking, smoking cannabis, prolong contact with Asbestos, radon gas which is naturally occurring gas from the soil, radioactive elements such as uranium, chromium and elements like nickel can cause lung cancers. Living in polluted cities can also cause lung cancer which is rare but not unheard of.
Although there has been lots of research and development to cure cancers, many scientist from around the world are positive that there will be huge advancements in the near future. People who are regular smokers should never ignore some of the major symptoms like continuous coughing, chest pain, difficulty in breathing, streaks of blood seen in sputum, weight loss for no reason etc. These are the red flags indicating something is seriously wrong and should seek immediate medical tests such as clinical examination by Oncologist, X-Ray tests, complete blood count, sputum examination, CT/PET scan, bronchoscopy etc.
The chances of recovery are very high if you spot the disease in time. But for the most part, Staying away from cigarettes and quitting smoking is the ONLY WAY to help prevent you from being diagnosed with this fatal disease.

Learning About Mesothelioma and Asbestos Exposure

With regard to the cancer known as mesothelioma and asbestos as the cause, it is a tumor that shows up most in the mesothelial cells of an organ. The heart, lungs and abdominal organs are the ones most likely to be affected. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of this cancer and it affects the lining of the lungs.
Exposure to roofing, ceiling and floor tiles, along with pipes, insulation and other materials used in construction before the 1970s is the most common cause of this cancer. All of those materials contained asbestos fibers, which are now known to be toxic. Automobile brakes contain asbestos and mechanics are at risk for developing the cancer as well.
The rule for determining the possibility of a person's chance of developing mesothelioma is dependent on the time they were exposed. It also is dependent on the amount of exposure.
It is hard to pin down, as mesothelioma affects do not show up for a long time. The average latency period seems to be somewhere around 35 to 40 years after the last exposure to products containing asbestos.
The symptoms of mesothelioma cancer can start to show up gradually. Chest pain and back pain are the most common complaints at the beginning. Fever, difficulty breathing and weight loss are symptoms that will probably bring the patient to the doctor for a diagnosis. The unfortunate part is that once mesothelioma shows itself, the progression of the disease is swift.
Prompt and aggressive treatment is necessary for a good outcome. There are several treatments available for mesothelioma. These include chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. The key is to catch the disease in its early stages, which will increase the patient's chance of survival. If you have developed mesothelioma and asbestos exposure was the cause, then you should alert your doctor as soon as possible.
It has been proven in asbestos cases in court that building product manufacturers knew of the deadly health risks of asbestos, yet continued to sell it and not provide a warning to the consumer or the worker. Because of this fact, many people who would otherwise be deemed healthy have contracted mesothelioma cancer.
After a patient is diagnosed with mesothelioma and asbestos exposure, manufacturers are mandated to provide compensation. Those eligible to make application for and receive this compensation include the families (spouses and children) of those who died from the disease before this mandate was handed down.

Asbestos Lawyers - From the South

Are you suffering from cancer or is a loved one of your suffering from cancer? You are not alone as there are many workers that have contracted cancer across the country due to asbestos. If you live in Connecticut or any other state for that matter and you have cancer because of asbestos, then you need a Connecticut asbestos lawyer or a lawyer for asbestos from your area.
Finding an asbestos lawyer is not difficult, but finding one that is going to get you what you deserve can be difficult. There have been many settlements across the country that have turned out to be great for the client, but there have also been a few that were not so good, and this is usually due to a not so good lawyer.
Just to give you an idea of the settlement that you should be after, ExxonMobile recently had to pay a lady $5 million dollars because her husband contracted cancer due to asbestos, while working for ExxonMobile and died. She was awarded the $5 million for her loss of her husband. This was not a settlement either, it went all the way to court. The jury found that ExxonMobile knew of the dangers and did not take the necessary safety measures to protect it's workers.
Asbestos is being found in many workplaces and is the leading cause of work related cancer by over twice the second danger on the list. It is not fair that you might have contracted cancer due to exposure to asbestos and it is not fair if you have lost or are going to lose someone because the company they worked for found it to be less expensive to let their employees die from cancer, then to spend the money to protect them from asbestos.
You can find out what your rights are and what the laws are in your state pertaining to asbestos by contacting an attorney that specialized in asbestos law. Most of the connecticut asbestos lawyers will even review your case for free and let you know what you might be able to do in order to seek compensation for your loss or illness.

Asbestos Lawyers - From a Wonderful City

Asbestos has affected many families across the United States and continues to affect those that have been exposed to this poison. It is the leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States, surpassing the dreaded breast cancer.
The most common cause of lung cancer is long term exposure to tobacco smoke. Three to five years after quitting, the risk of getting lung cancer is reduced by half. For smokers the risk is significant due to the synergistic effects of radon and smoking as well as asbestos exposure.
As dirt and smoke chemicals build up in your lungs, you have a higher change of getting lung cancer. Even non-smokers are not spared. People who constantly inhale secondhand smoke will also be likely to develop lung cancer.
Overall, this type of cancer is one of the most difficult cancers to treat and it is no wonder that it is the major cause of cancer death in the world. Lung cancer can generally be categorized as small cell cancer and non-small cancer. Non-small cell cancer is more common while small cell cancer is harder to treat because it generally spreads faster.
Lung cancer is very difficult to detect at an early stage, some symptoms may include a new or changing cough, along with hoarseness or shortness of breath or increased shortness of breath during exertion. Sadly, this type of cancer are usually detected only at late stage, and this greatly limit the treatments that is applicable to treat it.
Once lung cancer is detected, a treatment plan is developed based on the patient's physical health, whether the cancer is small cell or non-small cell and how extensively the cancer has spread.
Treatments usually involve surgery to remove the cancer cells and surrounding affected cells depends on how far the cancer has metasized.
In chemotherapy, drugs are given orally or through the vein to combat cancer cells. Chemotherapy is called a systemic treatment because the drug enters the blood stream, travels through the body, and can kill cancer cells outside the lungs.
Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. Radiation may come from a machine outside the body (external radiation therapy) or from putting colloidal materials that emit radiation (radioisotopes) through thin plastic tubes in the area where the cancer cells are found (internal radiation therapy).
Surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy are used to treat non-small cell lung cancer. These are mainstream treatments used by many doctors in medical institution. However, patients that have exhausted these treatments often look for other options in alternative treatments, and often with encouraging results.
Increasingly, more and more people turn to alternative treatment that reverse cancer through diet and lifestyle change. These treatments are usually inexpensive and aimed at repairing cancer cells instead of killing them.

Alternative Treatments For Lung Cancer

If your doctor has told you that your lung cancer can't be cured, you may be tempted to turn to complementary and alternative medicine for answers. But this doesn't mean you have to choose between conventional treatments and alternative treatments. Rather than forgoing mainstream cancer treatments, using complementary and alternative treatments along with care from your doctor may be a reasonable option.
Your doctor can help you weigh the benefits and risks of complementary and alternative treatments. The American College of Chest Physicians reviewed available complementary and alternative treatments and found some therapies may be helpful for people with lung cancer, including acupuncture, hypnosis, massage, meditation and yoga
The alternative treatments above are basically palliative treatments aimed to lessen the side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy and not curing the cancer. Patients can then enjoy quality time and for longer period too.
However, some alternative treatments such as Vitamin C Intravenous Infusion and Baking Soda water have even reversed the cancer and convert cancer cells back to healthy ones. Combined with mostly vegan cancer-friendly diet, the recovery cases have doctors scratching their heads.
Basically alternative treatment works by reducing toxin in the body, strengthen the immune system, control the excessive acidity bodily environment that encourage tumor growth and infuse the blood with more oxygen that kill cancer cells. In other words, these treatments are strategically targeted yet they are generally gentle and non-invasive as opposed to conventional treatment. Even patients with weak health can undergo these treatments.
Some newer alternative cancer treatments are giving lung cancer patients new hope, but there are never any guarantees treating advanced lung cancer because there are so many things that can go wrong. The Brandt Grape Cure is always recommended as a replacement for the "cancer diet" of any other alternative cancer treatment. This diet involve eating only grapes to flood the body with the goodness of antioxidant.
Though going to an alternative treatment route is perceived to be healthier, cancer experts said they tend not to recommend the procedures. This is mainly because alternative treatments are not FDA-approved and have no clear proof of success. There aren't stats on alternative treatments because there are no sponsors and there are strict guidelines that must be followed in order to publish a statistic.
Health insurance does not cover the cost of alternative treatment, but the good news is alternative treatments need not cost a lot of money. Since this is the aspect that the patient have control over in his or her cancer battle, it is worth a try.

Definition of Mesothelioma

There are a lot of definitios for mesothelioma. I have done some research in the web and I found many definitions. And I have chosen these definitions.
Mesothelioma definition
A tumor of the mesothelium, that can be benign (localized) or malignant (diffusely spread), and that is most commonly caused by the ingestion of asbestos particles.
Mesothelioma is a cancer of the cells that make up the lining around the outside of the lungs and inside of the ribs (pleura), or around the abdominal organs (peritoneum). It is usually fatal.
A type of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.
(mez-uh-thee-lee-YOH-muh) - A tumor in the lining of the chest or abdomen (stomach area).
A rare cancer that occurs in the thin layer of tissue that covers the majority of your internal organs (mesothelium)." (Mayo Clinic, 2007)
A cancer most often caused by exposure to asbestos, mesothelioma is a deadly medical condition in which cells mutate to form cancers on the mesothelium (most often of the lungs.
A kind of cancer that originates in the pleura, that is, the layer of cells that line the outer surface of the lung. This cancer is usually considered a tumor of the pleura and not a type of lung cancer.
Cancer involving the pleura (the membranes that cover the lungs).
A cancer of the lining of the lungs, chest and stomach caused by inhalation of asbestos dust and fibers or asbestos exposure
A cancer of cells similar to those forming the lining of the lungs, heart, the abdominal cavity and its organs.
A cancer in the tissue lining of certain organs, including the heart and lung, that may be attributed to long-term inhalation of asbestos.
A malignant tumor covering the lining of the lung and often associated with asbestos exposure.
A tumor or tumors affecting the lining of the chest or abdomen. Most cases of mesothelioma are malignant, and are caused by exposure to asbestos. A small number of cases of mesothelioma are benign, or non-cancerous.
A malignant tumor of mesothelium caused by the inhalation of asbestos
A tumor in the lining of the lungs. Mesothelioma is linked almost exclusively to asbestos exposure.
Hope that be helpful.

A Glimpse at Mesothelioma Info From the Past

If you look up mesothelioma info you will find that this is a term given to the cancer that is caused by asbestos. This is a disease that is contacted mostly by those who work in close proximity with asbestos products and materials. What is asbestos? This is a mineral which has some extraordinary properties, such as being fireproof and an exceptional insulator.
It seems that the ancient Greeks who coined the name for this mineral, meaning "inextinguishable," knew that it harmed humans if they were exposed to it for a long time. However, in modern times, since the products containing asbestos were very popular, and profitable, the dangers were ignored.
In the 1900s, it was first publicly accepted that asbestos and all things that contain asbestos could cause death among those who were continuously exposed to it for a long time. Twenty years later, doctors in England had sufficient mesothelioma info to conclusively support the relationship between the prolonged exposure to asbestos and death; this too was particularly attributed to lung diseases.
It was also found that with better ventilation, not only was indoor air quality improved, but the risks and fatalities were lowered. These steps were legalized and became standard procedure in England and in may other countries across the world.
Though mesothelioma info was widely circulated amongst manufactures and all those who were concerned with making and promoting asbestos products, it was only in the 1970s that the workers were at last protected from harm. Until then, everyone chose to ignore the dangers, only looking at the high profits that these asbestos containing items were generating. By that time, the deadly material had already claimed many lives of individuals who had worked with it, as well as the lives of many of their family members.
It took the world more than half a century to realize, accept, and to take action to curtail one of the most harmful side effects in the industrial field. Though complete mesothelioma info was known as early as the 1900s, people were sacrificed for profit since the asbestos products were in high demand at that time and the lower class laborers were deemed expendable.
Unfortunately, during these 50 plus years, many asbestos cases have developed and a great number of people who worked with and were exposed to the material had already developed cancer or mesothelioma and were on their death bed. This is a classical example of lives being sacrificed for profit.

Lung Cancer and Making a Difference

My sister died of Lung Cancer - she wasn't diagnosed until stage 4 - didn't have a symptom until it metastasized to her brain. Early detection could have prevented this. There is a diagnostic tool called the CT Spiral Scan and we need to rally and get send a message Congress can't ignore. Ask your Senators to add their support to S.3187, the Lung Cancer Mortality Reduction Act.
My sister Dale died four years ago this past May. When she died I had no idea how big a void would be created. Up to the end Dale and I would talk on the phone 3 - 4 times a day and then it just stopped - no more sharing - no more laughing and no more crying. At the end I told Dale that I would plant a tree and name it after her - I asked her what tree she wanted to be - she said she wanted to be a peach tree. My husband and I had bought an old house on 1 acre of land and it needed a lot of work - the grounds were a disaster but there was tremendous potential to turn it into something beautiful.
So we cleared an area and designated it as " Dale's Garden" it was sparse - but we went out and bought 3 peach trees ( to insure that at least one made it) and put them in the garden with a few 5 gallon banana, apricot, plum and almond trees. It looked pretty pathetic but I had sprinked some of Dale's ashes around the bigger peach tree and it has been amazing how quickly things have grown. Dale's garden has turned into a magical place for me - I know it is Dale's way of communicating to me. She has replaced the dark, hopeless and agonizing experience surrounding her illness and death with a message of love, peace and beauty. Over the last 4 years I have taken many pictures of the flowers, trees, vegetables and koi pond that grace this place in her memory. Her spirit nourishes the earth and warms my heart.
The other day as I was weeding an idea came to mind - I had been trying to think of something I could do to make a difference..a difference for Dale. Inspired by Dale I created Dale's Garden - where anyone can go to witness the beauty of the garden and be touched by her creations.
Please share Dale's Garden with all your family, friends and any organizations you belong to - please send it to everyone in your address book. I would like your help to reach as many people as possible around the world. Getting emails from people in other countries that have seen the beauty of Dale's creations will confirm that Dale still touches people today.
Spread the word - NO MORE EXCUSES....NO MORE LUNG CANCER.

Treatments For Lung Cancer

Treatments for lung cancer depend on a combination of factors. How advanced is the cancer? Are the tumors localized or have they spread to other locations within the body (metastasized)? How is the overall health of the patient? What are the desires of the patient?
Traditionally, lung cancers treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or a combination of these. For instance, after surgery to remove a tumor, radiation therapy may be used to make sure all of the diseased cells have been destroyed. This is referred to as adjuvant therapy.
In some cases, the goal of the treatment is to halt and destroy the cancer. In other cases, obviously the more severe cases, the goal of treatment is simply to reduce the pain and discomfort of the patient.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to combat the lung cancer. Which drugs are used is determined by the specific form of the lung cancer and its stage. Sometimes referred to as cytotoxins (drugs that are toxic to cancer cells), their purpose is to disrupt the reproduction of the cancerous cells. This is generally accomplished through a combination of drugs, administered either intravenously or orally.
Traditionally, these drugs have been introduced into the bloodstream to spread throughout the body with the intent that they will eventually encounter the cancerous cells and kill them off. In other words, the drugs not only kill cancerous cells, they kill healthy cells as well. In some cases, doctors are able to specifically localize the drugs around the cancerous cells, though this is rare.
The side effects of this treatment often overwhelm the patient. Nausea, vomiting, mouth sores, loss of hair, loss of appetite ... these are all common side effects of chemotherapy.
Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy is most often used in conjunction with surgery and/or chemotherapy. External beam radiation and Brachytherapy are the two primary therapies used for the treatment of lung cancer. External beam radiation therapy is often used in those cases when the health of the patient is poor and surgery isn't an option. Brachytherapy is commonly used to relieve a blockage of large airways.
Occasionally, radiation therapy is recommended as the sole treatment option for lung cancer. Generally, this will happen in those situations when the patient is too ill to undergo surgery or withstand chemotherapy. When radiation therapy is used as the sole treatment for lung cancer, it results in the shrinking of tumors and complete remission from cancer symptoms approximately 10-15% of the time.
Surgery
If lung cancer is caught in the early stages, particularly stage one non-small cell lung cancer, surgery to remove the tumor is often the preferred treatment. At this stage, the cancer is confined to the lungs, often in the form of a single tumor, and surgery can be quite effective at removing most or all of it. However, the more advanced a lung cancer becomes, the less effective surgery becomes. Once it spreads beyond the chest and metastasizes to other organs, surgery is generally ineffective and not a workable option.
Depending on the growth of the cancer and the condition of the lungs, surgery can result in the removal of part of one lobe or even the removal of an entire lung. Complications can include infection, pneumonia and excessive bleeding. The good news is that up to 40% of patients who undergo surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from their lungs are still alive five years after the surgery. Surgical removal is not a guarantee of a cure, however, since cancerous cells may already have begun to spread.
Medical experts estimate that between 10% and 35% of all lung cancers can be removed surgically.
Recently, an invasive procedure referred to as video-assisted thoracic surgery has been useful in treating patients surgically without open surgery, which eliminates many of the usual complications. A tumor smaller than 4 to 5 cm can be treated using this method, which surgeons use to operate through 2 to 4 tiny openings between the ribs while viewing the patient's internal organs on a television monitor. Each opening is less that one inch in diameter.

What is Lung Cancer?

Lung cancer is a growth of malignant cells in the lungs.
You see, throughout your life the cells in your body continually divide and reproduce. Believe it or not, every minute of your life this process takes place ten million times. Think about it ... ten million times a minute! Not only is that incredible, it's a demonstration of how complex your body really is.
Now, for the most part, this all takes place in an orderly manner as your cells go about doing their job of meeting the needs of your body. Occasionally, however, a cellular mutation will occur and rather than maturing and dying as it was intended to do, a cell continues reproducing. This is cancer ... the uncontrolled reproduction and growth of abnormal cells in the body.
Lung cancer is the growth of these malignant cells in the lungs.
Most often, the malignant cells are believed to form in the epithelial lining of the airways, where the oxygen is extracted from the air we breathe. This is why lung cancer is sometimes referred to as bronchogenic carcinoma (cancer arising from the bronchia). A relatively small percentage of lung cancer (10% or less) begins in the pleura, the thin tissue sac that surrounds the lungs. These cancers are called mesothelioma. The most common form of mesothelioma is linked to exposure to asbestos. The rarest form of begins in the blood vessels or other supporting tissues of the lungs.
Types of Lung Cancer
There are two main types - small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
SCLC is the less common of the two, which is good, because it's also the more deadly. Less than one percent of SCLC is diagnosed in non-smokers. This means that smoking is the primary culprit behind this type of lung cancer. SCLC is aggressive and fast-moving. It rapidly metastasizes to other organs, and is often not discovered until the cancer is already widespread throughout the body.
Non-small cell lung cancer accounts for approximately 80% of diagnosed lung cancer cases. Within this category, there are three main sub-categories ... squamous cell cancer, adenocarcinomas, and large cell carcinomas. Sometimes two or even all three can appear together.
Finally, there are some less common types such as bronchial carcinoids (small tumors that are most often found in people under 40 years of age). These tend to be less aggressive, grow slowly, and often can be effectively treated.
A Deadly Cancer
Cancer of the lungs is one of the deadliest forms of cancer. This is primarily due to the fact that lung cancer tends to metastasize early in the process of the disease and is often not discovered until it's spread. Additionally, when it does metastasize, it tends to spread to the most vital yet vulnerable organs of the body. The adrenal glands, the liver, the brain and the bones are all early targets.
Finally, because the lungs are so susceptible to metastatic cancers from other sources throughout the body, it's not uncommon to find a cancer in the lungs that is not lung cancer but a metastatic cancer. These cancers tend to make their home in the peripheral tissues of the lungs rather than the primary tissues.

What is Mesothelioma Lung Cancer?

Mesothelioma is nothing but a cancer of mesothelium. It affects the abdominal cavity, chest cavity and the region surrounding the heart. It is basically the covering structure of most of the internal organs of the body. Mesothelioma is typically difficult to diagnose and treat due to its uncommon nature.
Cancer is basically excess growth of cell of particular organ or tissue. Here the triggering factor is exposure to asbestos, a material formerly present in many work environments. That's why it is also called asbestos lung cancer. However it can also be triggered by other substances such as irradiation, erionite [fibrous silicate] and thorium dioxide. The people who are exposed to asbestos particles are highly prone to this disease. It occurs mostly to persons who work in construction industry, ship building industry, automotive industry or other manufacturing industry where exposure to asbestos is common. Therefore men are typically affected more, due to the common presence of asbestos in industrial settings however this disease condition can be noticed in women too.
The latency of Mesothelioma is up to 30 to 40 years, and many individuals previously exposed to asbestos are now displaying symptoms. This means average of Mesothelioma patients is between 50 to 70 years. The risk of Mesothelioma increases as the age increases but the disease can make its appearance at any age.
Symptoms may include but are not limited to respiratory distress, a lasting cough and pneumonia. In addition; symptoms are often mistaken for less serious ailments. Individual with pleural Mesothelioma may accumulate some fluid between the lung lining and chest cavity however this could be easily detected through a chest x-ray.
Radiotherapy is one of the best Mesothelioma treatment option. Also radiotherapy along with chemotherapy can be attempted for Mesothelioma diagnosis. All in all Mesothelioma is a life threatening disease and cannot be left untreated. The sooner it is detected the better a patient's chances are of fighting this deadly disease.

Mesothelioma Incidence and Asbestos Cause - How Many People Are at Risk?

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer caused mainly by asbestos. It's a very serious type of cancer, and families who have been touched by mesothelioma have many challenges ahead. Treatment of Mesothelioma is very expensive. It is caused by excess growth of cell and here asbestos is responsible for it. That's why it is also called asbestos cancer.
Most Mesothelioma patients have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles, or they have been exposed to asbestos dust and fiber in other ways. The symptoms of Mesothelioma include shortness of breath, chest pain, and general symptoms such as weight loss, constipation and cough.
The incidence of Mesothelioma is one in 10 lakh people. The rate slightly goes up in western countries. The incidence of this disease is 7 to 40 in 10 lakh person. The reason for increased incidence in western countries in nothing but the industrialization. Diagnosing Mesothelioma is often difficult, because the symptoms are similar to those of a number of other conditions. Diagnosis begins with a review of the patient's medical history. A history of exposure to asbestos may increase clinical suspicion for Mesothelioma
After the diagnosis of Mesothelioma the stage of cancer is determined. This process is called staging. Their are 4 stages depending on the extent of your disease. The tests that may help to determine your cancer are chest X-ray, CT scan of chest and abdomen, MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging) and PET (Positron emission tomography). After determining the stage of your cancer your treatment is done according to it.
Mesothelioma that progresses can lead to death. People who die of Mesothelioma usually die from related complications, such as lung failure, heart problems, stroke and other causes therefore its early detection is must.

How to Recognize the Early Signs of Lung Cancer in Women

Incidence of lung cancer deaths in women grew one hundred and fifty percent during a period of time from 1974 until 1994. During the same time period there was an increase of merely twenty percent in men. This disease is responsible for more deaths in women than breast cancer. It is reported that half of all new cases of this illness are women.
It can take several years for the warning signs and symptoms of lung cancer to arise. This may lead to the disease not being diagnosed until it is in an advance stage. Symptoms that can arise may include:
Back, shoulder, or chest pain that is relentless and unrelated to pain that can occur from coughing.
Out of breath.
Intense, unrelenting smoker's cough.
Persistent nonsmoker's cough that lasts longer than two weeks.
Occurrences of bronchitis or pneumonia that keep coming back.
Change in color of sputum (mucus or phlegm mixed with saliva).
Finding blood in sputum.
Other late stage lung cancer related signs or symptoms may be:
Loss of desire for food.
Weight loss that cannot be explained.
Low energy.
Swelling in the neck and face.
Headache, aching joints, bone pain.
A wobbly gait and other neurologic signs such as memory loss.
Bone breakage not related to an accident.
Detecting lung cancer early can result in life and death for someone suffering with this disease. If it is found early while it is affecting only the lungs (or remaining localized) the five year survival rate is nearly fifty percent.
There are also symptoms and signs that can be caused by the spread of lung cancer to other parts of one's body. These signs may include:
Bleeding.
Bone breakage.
Blood clots.
Headache.
Physical weakness.
More research is needed to understand why the number or women dying from lung cancer is increasing. Women are one and a half times more at risk for the disease than men. Women are smoking fewer cigarettes and they inhale less of the cigarettes that they do smoke but risks of the illness are still higher for them. Scientists suppose this could be genetically linked.
Early detection may save a woman's life. Those experiencing these symptoms or signs should consult their physician as soon as possible.
Smoking cigarettes is viewed as the main reason for eighty percent of the lung cancer deaths in women.

Learn More About Sarcomatoid Carcinoma

What is Sarcomatoid cancer?
Sarcomatoid cancer (SARC) of the lung is a rare type of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC). Non-Small Cell lung cancer accounts for about 80% of all lung cancers. There are several types of Non-Small Cell lung cancer and each type is associated with a uniquely different type of cancer cells. Sarcomatoid cancer cells tend to invade the lung tissue more deeply than other types of cancerous cells.
It has been suggested that radiotherapy for the treatment of a patient's other cancer's may induce a Sarcomatoid change in lung tissue which could preempt the subsequent development of a Sarcomatoid Carcinoma.
Sarcomatoid cancer (SARC) is sometimes found in other parts of the body although the incidence is more common in the upper body, particularly the lungs. Although this rare form of cancer has been associated with a poor prognosis, its effect on survival rates and incidence of recurrence has not been well documented or studied to date.
The survival rate in patients diagnosed with SARC is dependent upon a number of factors such as any metastases and the original cause or site of the cancer. In a recent study, the five year survival rate for Sarcomatoid cancer patients was 24.5% compared with 46.3% for patients with other forms of NSCLC.
Primary pulmonary Sarcomatoid Carcinoma can only be differentiated from other types of carcinoma by close examination involving immunohistochemistry (microscopic and biologic examinations) and molecular analysis. Once a tumor is identified as being SARC, it is then further defined by the presence of spindle cell lesions in the lung. SARC may also be described as a Carcinosarcoma, a Pseudosarcomatoid Carcinoma or spindle cell Carcinoma. These are all terms which define the lesions as seen on examination.
SARC is an aggressive form of cancer and the resultant tumors are frequently symptomatic, locally advanced and have high rates of recurrence. Non-surgical treatments are usually recommended for patients with clinically advanced Sarcomatoid cancer.
Inflammatory Sarcomatoid Carcinoma is an aggressive tumor with an unusually benign appearance. Inflammatory SARC amounts to just 0.1% to 0.4% of all lung malignancies and most often occurs in male smokers who are usually around 60 years of age at the time of diagnosis.
Patients most often present with cough, hemoptysis (coughing blood), chest pain, and dyspnea (shortness of breath). As with other non-small cell carcinomas of the lung, the clinical stage of SARC seems to be the most important prognostic factor. The diagnosis of Sarcomatoid Carcinoma cancer requires the exclusion of other diseases that histologically - that is, microscopically - may appear similar. It is therefore most often not confirmed as being SARC until tumor sampling has been carried out.
SARC may be mistaken for an inflammatory pseudo-tumor (IP) which is the most common type of lung cancer found predominantly in younger patients who have a history of cigarette smoking. Chest x-rays can't always distinguish between SARC and IP so again, histologic investigations as well as biopsy may be required to make an accurate diagnosis.
The definitive diagnosis of Sarcomatoid Carcinoma with a primary or metastatic lung sarcoma - especially spindle cell carcinoma - can again be difficult and in-depth studies may be required to establish if the SARC is primary or secondary to other pulmonary cancers. The treatment options for Sarcomatoid Carcinoma will vary depending upon many factors to do with the patients overall condition.

Lung Cancer

Cancer is a well known disease to almost all of us. Every year many victims are falling prey to this deadly disease. Up to now no such medicine has been discovered that can cure cancer disease. Cancer develops in the form of a tumor and slowly and steadily these cancer cells increase in number. The reason because of which cancer is a deadly disease is that it shows no external symptoms in the victim's body. It is said that if cancer is diagnosed in the early stages, it can be cured. There are many forms of cancer which affect the lives of thousands of people. One of the forms is lung cancer. Lung cancer is still affecting the lives of thousands of people. There are many different causes of lung cancer. The top most factor of causing lung cancer is smoking. The harmful substances of smoke destroy the lung cells. It is not necessary that a person who does not smoke can't get lung cancer. If a particular person is regularly exposed to the tobacco smoke, the risk of lung cancer is higher.
There are many other factors too which are responsible for cancer. These include some natural factors too which are not in our control. These things include radon, asbestos, nickel, chromium, tar etc. These things are highly responsible for causing lung cancer and they mostly affect those people who work in the factories of these substances. The other major cause of lung cancer is air pollution. The risk of becoming a victim of lung cancer is higher in those cities which have high percentage of air pollution.
If cancer is diagnosed in an early stage it can be cured using some medication and precautions. There are many medicines available which help in resisting the cancer cells from growing inside the body if diagnosed in an early stage. According to some experts, a good diet is very helpful in protecting the body from the deadly cancer disease. A diet rich in fruits, green vegetables, low fat stuff, grains and preservatives is very helpful in minimizing the risk of lung cancer. Avoiding the use of alcohol is also very helpful in reducing the risk of deadly lung cancer. The other factor which minimizes the risk of cancer is fitness of the body. According to experts, physically fit human beings are less prone to lung cancer. If a person is maintaining a high fitness level, he can avoid lung cancer even after performing cigarette smoking.
There are many vitamins, drugs and other chemical agents available which are helpful in reducing the risk or delaying the growth of cancer and are called as chemoprevention. Many scientists are trying their best to make a medicine using these drugs and vitamins which can be helpful in curing lung cancer. But up to now no such medication has been discovered which can be proved helpful in curing lung cancer completely.
